Because the precept of abstaining from sexual misconduct out of desire has been obtained, it is not mentioned for lay practitioners to abstain from unchaste conduct. If some of these abstentions are established as objects of learning, then the learning becomes very different, and the branches of the lay practitioner's precepts will become non-precepts. What is not to be done is a precept that is not necessarily not to be done. If someone becomes a lay practitioner and then takes a wife, do they also obtain the precepts? If they do not obtain them, then they will obtain temporary precepts. How will the precepts not be broken? Because, the precepts are obtained as promised, not for other reasons. Their precepts are obtained as promised, how did they promise? I promise to abstain from sexual misconduct out of desire, but I did not say that I would not practice celibacy in this continuum. Therefore, from that basis, they only obtain the precept of the branch of sexual misconduct out of desire, not unchaste conduct, so for those who become wives, there is no breaking of the precepts. Again, why is it that only abstaining from lying is made the object of learning for the lay practitioner's precepts, and not abstaining from divisive speech, etc.? Because of those three reasons, namely, lying is very reprehensible, easy to protect, and one obtains what is not to be done. Transcending all the objects of learning, lying is also speaking falsely. In all the objects of learning, asking the transcendent one, I have not done such a thing, and incidentally lying. This will become abiding in sin, therefore it is called abstaining from lying, even if one has transcended, one will become defiled. Again, why is this heavy offense that has been established not established as an object of learning? It is established, the heavy offense that has been established, is alcohol itself. Why is it only alcohol and not others? Because others need to be protected. If one drinks alcohol, the other branches will not be protected, therefore only it is established as an object of learning, not others. What are the three precepts of individual liberation, meditative concentration, and uncontaminated precepts?

If one obtains one from these, doesn't one also obtain the rest? Answer: No. If asked: How is it? All desires and both, are obtained from the present karma. The so-called "desires" are the Pratimoksha vows. The so-called "all" are the preparation, the actual, and the conclusion. The so-called "both" are sentient beings and non-sentient beings, and faults with inherent nature. Because names are nominally established on the basis of sentient beings, they are obtained only from the present aggregates, elements, and sources, not from the past and future, because those are not counted as sentient beings. The two vows of meditation and non-outflow, from the actual and all times. The two vows of meditation and non-outflow are obtained only from the actual path, not from the preparation and conclusion, let alone from faults with vows. From all times, also from the past and future aggregates, elements, and sources. Furthermore, are the two, vows and non-vows, obtained from all sentient beings, all limbs, and all causes? Or is there a difference? Answer: There is. What is necessarily obtained for the time being is: vows from all sentient beings, there is a difference in limbs and causes. Vows are obtained from all sentient beings, not from some sentient beings. Limbs are different, some are obtained from all, that is, the Bhikshu vows. Some are obtained from four, that is, other vows. The paths of karma are limbs of vows. Also, some causes are from all categories, some are from one. For the time being, what does "all" mean? If one considers non-attachment, non-hatred, and non-ignorance as causes. What does "one" mean? If one considers small, medium, and large minds as causes. From where vows are obtained has been explained. All non-vows, all limbs are non-causes. They are obtained from all sentient beings and all paths of karma, there is no non-vow holder who is complete with non-vows. Not from all causes, because small minds and so on do not arise simultaneously.
