Transform! Eating on time and completely abstaining from untimely food, thereby the mindfulness and joy of fasting will abide, without them, neither will exist. Furthermore, is this abiding close only for lay practitioners? Or is it for others as well? Others also have abiding close, but it is not possible without taking refuge. Even those who are not lay practitioners take refuge in the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha on that day, and if they observe the abiding close, then the vows of the abiding close will arise for them, otherwise they will not. Does merely taking refuge make one a lay practitioner? The people of India say that it does. The Kashmiris say that it is not possible without vows. Moreover, it is said in the sutra, "Great Name, for what reason does a householder wearing white clothes, a man with male genitals, take refuge in the Buddha, take refuge in the Dharma, take refuge in the Sangha, and also say the words, 'Please accept me as a lay practitioner'?" It is said that merely by doing so, one becomes a lay practitioner. There is no contradiction in this, because from this it arises, from the lay practitioner himself promising, merely promising the vows, the lay practitioner himself, the vows of this lay practitioner will also arise, at the time of promising, "Please accept me as a lay practitioner." Thereafter, "abstaining from killing" and so on is a general term for abstaining from killing and so on, because the intermediate words are not manifest. Even if one has obtained the vows, in order to communicate them, one should declare the precepts like a monk. Just as monks and novices, even if they have obtained the vows, in order to communicate them, should again be given the precepts, saying, "Your vows are this and this," lay practitioners are the same, therefore it is not right to say that there are lay practitioners without vows. If all are guarded, then how about partial practice and so on? If all lay practitioners abide in the vows of lay practitioners, then the Bhagavan's teachings on partial practice, part practice, mostly practice, and complete

If asked, what is the so-called conduct of a layperson? This is not contradictory, because (in the scriptures) it is said to protect it. Whoever protects the precepts that should be protected is called conduct, but everything is the same in abiding in the discipline. All disciplines, like small ones, etc. The small, medium, and large are determined by the mind of truly receiving them. If it is said in this way, then an Arhat may have a small Pratimoksha discipline, and an ordinary person may have a large one. Also, if one takes refuge in the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, then what is the refuge here? The Dharma that makes the Buddha and Sangha, the non-learner and the two, Nirvana is the refuge, and its refuge is three. Whoever takes refuge in the Buddha is taking refuge in the Dharma that makes one a Buddha, that is, the non-learning Dharma, because mainly those who call his body the Buddha. The form body has no difference in the past and the future. Whoever takes refuge in the Sangha is taking refuge in the Dharma that makes the Sangha, that is, the learning and non-learning Dharma, because by obtaining (merit), the eight types of individuals cannot be distinguished, so it is indivisible. Whoever takes refuge in the Dharma is taking refuge in the cessation of Nirvana, which is individually analyzed, because the nature of the cessation of afflictions and suffering in the continuum of oneself and others is the same. Also, why is abstaining from unchaste conduct established as a precept in other disciplines, while abstaining from sexual misconduct is established as a precept in the lay vows? Sexual misconduct is extremely condemned, easy, therefore not done, for the sake of gain. Because sexual misconduct is the act of destroying another's wife and is the cause of falling into evil destinies, it is extremely condemned in the world. Unchaste conduct is not like that. Or, for householders, abstaining from sexual misconduct is easy to protect, while unchaste conduct is difficult to protect, so it cannot be protected. Or, the noble ones do not do what should not be done in other lives, so it is a discipline that should not be done.
