Anointing and perfumes, dancing, singing, and music, tall beds and large beds, untimely food, and the eight branches of precepts, if properly taken, one becomes a lay practitioner. If one upholds these same things, as well as gold and silver, dancing, singing, and music, fragrances, garlands, and anointing, dividing these into two categories here, they become ten branches. If one properly takes the ten precepts, one becomes a novice. If one properly takes the precepts of abandoning all actions of body and so forth, one becomes a monk. These Pratimoksha precepts are called morality and good conduct, action and discipline. Because it makes unequal actions equal, it is called morality. In terms of its definitive meaning, it is called morality because it is cooling. From the verses, it is also said, "Taking morality correctly is happiness; there is no complete suffering on the body." For this reason. Because it is praised by the wise, it is good conduct. Because it is the nature of action, it is action. Furthermore, the first manifest action and non-manifest action, Pratimoksha and the path of action. The first manifest action of properly taking the precepts is Pratimoksha, the non-manifest action is called Pratimoksha, because by it one is separately liberated from sins, it is the meaning of abandonment. Because it guards body and speech, it is also called discipline. It is also called the path of action. For the second moment and so on, it is only the Pratimoksha precept, not Pratimoksha itself. It is the end, not the actual path of action. Furthermore, among these precepts, what corresponds to what? Eight correspond to Pratimoksha. Corresponding to the Pratimoksha precepts are: monk, nun, probationary nun, novice monk, novice nun, lay practitioner, lay woman, and the eighth is the lay practitioner, corresponding to the eight assemblies. Born of meditation and corresponding to it. Born from meditation by meditation, therefore it is born of meditation. Whoever corresponds to meditation undoubtedly corresponds to the discipline of meditation. Here, even the access concentration is spoken of as meditation. For example, in this village there are rice fields, fields of grain.

Just as a city is also near (a village). Those who possess the stainless noble beings, as well as the stainless precepts and the noble individuals, are also trainees and non-trainees. What is said (in the scriptures) is that the co-emergent cause is the two precepts that follow the mind. So what are these two precepts? Among these three precepts, the latter two follow the mind, namely the precepts of dhyana and the precepts of no outflows. The Pratimoksha precepts are not, because (they) also follow other minds and no minds. (Furthermore,) the precepts of dhyana and the precepts of no outflows, they also obtain the name of precepts of abandonment. In what circumstances do they arise? (Answer:) When the path of no interval arises, these two are called precepts of abandonment in the invincible path. In the invincible path, the precepts of dhyana and the precepts of no outflows, in the nine paths of no interval, because they abandon those defilements that cause the vows to be broken and initiate all afflictions, they are also called precepts. Moreover, the Blessed One said, "The precepts of the mind are good." And "He dwells, guarded by the precepts of the eye faculty." So what is the nature of these two precepts of mind and faculty? These two are not non-revealing forms, so what kind of non-revealing forms are they not? (Answer:) Mindfulness and awareness are the precepts of mind and faculty. The precepts of mind are the nature of mindfulness and awareness, and the precepts of faculty are also the nature of mindfulness and awareness. In order to show that each is the nature of both, the word "two" is mentioned again, in order to avoid misunderstanding as a number. Now it should be examined what is revealing form, what is non-revealing form, and for how long one possesses these (precepts). Regarding this, one who abides in the Pratimoksha, as long as he does not abandon it, constantly possesses the present non-revealing form. From the first moment onwards, (he possesses) the past, and from the first moment onwards is
