Shape as a substance of other kinds does not exist. If it did, it would become a dual apprehension. Even if seen by the eye, it would be understood as 'long'; even if touched by the body's senses, it would be understood as 'long.' Therefore, if this is something apprehended by the senses themselves, there is no dual apprehension in the origin of form. Therefore, shape is not the substance itself. If any small form with obstruction exists, it would exist in the subtle particles that have not been devoured by demons. The shape of things like 'long' is not in the particles. Therefore, it is on the basis of the existence of many things in that way that 'long' and so forth are designated. Now, if the movement and shape of the body are also eliminated, then why do you, who demonstrate with examples, designate the form of the body as a representational form? They designate the shape itself as the representational form of the body, but not as a substance. When designating it, how do they designate it as the action of the body? The action that depends on the body is the action of the body, which is the mind that causes the body to enter there and there. Similarly, the actions of speech and mind should also be understood accordingly. The Sutra masters say that shape is the substance itself, and the representational form of the body is the nature of shape. The representational form of speech is the sound of speech. Whatever is the sound of the nature of speech, that is their representational form. Non-representational form is what was previously stated. The exemplifiers say that it is merely a claim of non-action, therefore it is not the substance itself. The Sutra masters say that it exists. How is it known? From the three kinds of immaculate form spoken of in the sutras, and from increase and non-creation, etc. In the sutras, three kinds of form are spoken of: visible and obstructive form, invisible and obstructive form, and neither visible nor obstructive form. Thus, form will only be included in the form of these three places. Uncontaminated form is also spoken of. What are the uncontaminated dharmas? It is when one does not generate attachment or anger towards forms that have arisen in the past, future, and present, up to consciousness.

Until the state of non-arising, this is called the undefiled Dharma. Apart from non-manifest form, there is nothing that can be indicated, no unobstructed form, and no undefiled. It is also said to increase, as stated in the Sutra of the Seven Objects of Merit Arising from Matter: "Constantly and continuously, merit manifestly increases and arises." This is also said only of non-manifest form; otherwise, the mind cannot cause merit to manifestly increase. I also see the path of action arising completely from what I have not done but caused others to do, and that cannot be without non-manifest form. The Blessed One also said: "Monks, Dharma is the external sense base; what is not included by the eleven sense bases is unteachable and unobstructed." He did not say that it is formless. If you do not see the form that belongs to the category of the Dharma sense base, what need is there for it? When entering into meditative absorption, because there is no speech, no end of action, and no livelihood, apart from non-manifest form, it will not become the eightfold noble path. Therefore, non-manifest form exists. If it exists, it is said to be caused by the great elements. Then what? Is it that the great elements of manifest form are the cause, and then non-manifest form arises? Answer: No, from that collection, both the subtle fruit and the coarse fruit cannot arise. What? Is it not that the collection of manifest form at any time, with that collection as the cause, the great elements are taken as the cause? Most of the forms that are taken as the cause are like that. A little of the present and the future is caused by the past great elements. What is that? Desire realm non-manifest form instant, hereafter born from past arising. What is called the desire realm non-manifest form is acting in desire. What is called the instant hereafter is the time after the first instant. What is called born from past arising is caused by the past great elements.

That which is born of earth, these become the basis of this meaning, and the great elements that arise now become the meaning of support. Because it is the cause of entering and following, the order is like a wheel touching a cave with a hand and the direction of the earth. Furthermore, what elements are the cause of the actions of body and speech that fill the earth? The actions of body and speech with outflows are caused by their own elements. The actions of body and speech that are practiced in the desire realm are caused by the great elements of the desire realm itself. Likewise, in the fourth dhyana, even between the earth and the earth, those earths themselves are the cause. Where is the outflowless born? The actions of body and speech without outflows, where they are born, are caused by the great elements of that earth, and should be known as such. Because it is not a realm, and because there are no elements in the outflowless, and because it is born by its power. Here, there are actions of manifestation and non-manifestation. Non-manifestation arises from similar causes, and should be understood as not encompassing sentient beings. Furthermore, similar causes encompass the arising of great elements. Non-manifestation arises from similar causes, and the great elements themselves that are encompassed are the cause, such as those that are not in equipoise. That which is born of samadhi arises from causes and is not encompassed by one element. The non-manifestation of dhyana and outflowless vows that are born of samadhi are born of samadhi and arise from growth, and are caused by the great elements that are not encompassed and not different. What elements are the cause of abandoning killing, and even abandoning idle talk? Why? Because, like the mind, the elements are different. The Pratimoksha vows are caused by other great elements, and seven non-manifestations arise. Manifestation arises from similar causes and is encompassed by the body. Thus, there are two and three types of actions.
