Homage! Now, let us explain the meaning of the aggregates, sources, and elements: gathering and the gate of birth are the meanings of types; the aggregates, sources, and elements are these. The meaning of gathering is the meaning of aggregates; the meaning of the gate of birth is the meaning of sources; the meaning of types is the meaning of elements. Furthermore, why did the Bhagavan reveal the three aspects through the aggregates and so forth? It is for the sake of taming sentient beings, because of ignorance and the three faculties. Therefore, the three, such as the aggregates, were taught. 'Three' means three aspects. It is because sentient beings are ignorant in three ways: some are ignorant of the mind-born phenomena because they grasp at the whole as self; some are ignorant of form itself; and some are ignorant of both form and mind. The faculties are also three: sharp, middling, and dull faculties. Faith also has three aspects: faith in concise teachings, intermediate teachings, and extensive teachings. These correspond to the order in which the aggregates, sources, and elements are taught. Furthermore, why are other mind-born phenomena made into one aggregate, the aggregate of formations, while feeling and perception are made into separate aggregates? It is said: Because they are the root of strife, the cause of samsara, and for the sake of order, feeling and perception are shown as separate aggregates from among the mind-born phenomena. The roots of strife are two: excessive attachment to desire. The main causes of these two are feeling and perception, respectively. Because feeling, through the power of tasting, leads to manifest attachment to desire, and perception, through the power of perversion, transforms into various views. The main cause of samsara is also these, because attachment to feeling and perverted perception cause samsara. It is also the cause of the order of the aggregates, and the cause of the order of showing the place. Therefore, it should be understood that these two are made into separate aggregates, which will be explained later. Furthermore, why is the unconditioned taught in the sources and elements, but not in the aggregates? The unconditioned is not taught in the aggregates because it is not practically useful. If it were spoken of within the aggregates,

For the moment, it is neither form nor even consciousness, therefore it is not applicable in meaning. Therefore, it is not possible to include it therein. Since it is not applicable in meaning, how could one even speak of a sixth aggregate? Because the meaning of accumulation is called an aggregate, what is unaccumulated is not compatible with the meaning of accumulation. Furthermore, in order to know the objects of all afflictions, it is called the aggregate of appropriation; and also, in order to know the objects of all afflictions and purifications, it is also called an aggregate. However, what is unaccumulated is not applicable in meaning, so it is neither of the two, therefore it is not established among them. The establishment of the aggregates has been explained. The order is coarseness and all afflictions, and from the meaning of vessel etc., of the elements. Form is the coarsest of all and is obstructive and inclusive. For those that are not form, feeling is also a coarse flow, for example, one says, "My head feels pain, half of my head feels pain." Perception is the second coarsest. Formation is coarser than consciousness, therefore what is coarsest is spoken of first. Or, in beginningless samsara, men and women clearly delight in form with each other, and they are also attached to tasting the flavor of feeling. That attachment is also because of the perverted perception. That perversion is also because of the afflictions. The mind is completely defiled by afflictions, therefore according to the order of afflictions. Or, from the meaning of vessel etc., the aggregates such as form are like a vessel, food, seasoning, agent, and something profound. Or, from the elements, the qualities of desire differentiated by form are the desire realm, differentiated by feeling are the meditations, differentiated by perception are the three formless realms, differentiated only by formation is the peak of existence. Since consciousness abides in them, these are the places where consciousness abides. The order of the aggregates is to show the order like a field and seed. Therefore, there are only five aggregates, neither more nor less. Therefore, they are the coarsest and the cause of afflictions.
