It is accomplished by the function of holding and so on. Holding, gathering, ripening, and increasing, these functions are accomplished in order by the functions of the elements of earth, water, fire, and wind. The nature is in order: earth is solid, water is moist, fire is warm, and wind is moving. The element of earth is solidity. The element of water is moisture. The element of fire is warmth. The element of wind is motion. What is the difference between earth and so on, and the element of earth and so on? In worldly terms, earth is spoken of in terms of color and shape. When indicating earth in this way, it refers to color and shape. Just as with earth, water and fire are also spoken of in worldly terms in terms of color and shape. The element of wind itself, that which is the element of wind itself, is called wind in the world. Although this is so, just as it is spoken of in worldly terms in terms of color and shape, so too it is said of wind, 'blue wind,' 'round wind.' The great elements have been explained. Whatever has been said about the nature of the form aggregate, those very sense faculties and objects, are considered to be the twelve sources and eighteen elements. The division of sources is the twelve sources, from the eye source and the form source to the body source and the touch source. The division of elements is the eighteen elements, from the eye element to the form element, and the body element and the touch element. The form aggregate and its sources and element divisions have been explained. Next, feeling and so on will be discussed. Among these, feeling is experience, experiencing pleasure, pain, and neither pleasure nor pain, these three are the feeling aggregate. Perception is the nature of grasping characteristics, that is, grasping the characteristics of blue, yellow, long, short, male, female, friend, enemy, pleasure, pain, and so on, this is the perception aggregate. Other than the four aggregates is the formation aggregate. Other than form, feeling, perception, and the consciousness aggregate to be discussed below, formations are the formation aggregate.

Among these, three are the aggregates of feeling, recognition, and formation. In the establishment of realms and sources, it is not knowable. Together with non-compounded things, it is called the Dharma source and Dharma realm. Thus, these seven things are shown as the Dharma source and Dharma realm. The individual discernment of each consciousness, perceiving and distinguishing objects individually, is called the aggregate of consciousness. That is, the collection of six consciousnesses, from eye consciousness to mind consciousness. When the aggregate of consciousness is explained in this way, in the establishment of sources, it is also the mind source. In the establishment of realms, it is also the same, and it is considered to be seven realms. What are the seven? The six consciousnesses and the mind. From the realm of eye consciousness to the realm of mind consciousness and the mind realm. Thus, here the five aggregates, twelve sources, and eighteen realms are separately shown. Except for the non-knowable, the aggregate of form is the ten sources and ten realms. The aggregates of feeling, etc., the non-knowable, and the non-compounded things are the source and the Dharma realm. The aggregate of consciousness is the mind source, the six consciousness realms, and the mind realm. Then, if the collection of six consciousnesses is said to be the aggregate of consciousness, then what is the mind realm here that is different from them? Although there is nothing else, it is just those six, the consciousness that has just passed, that is the mind. Whatever consciousness has just passed, that is the mind realm, just as a son becomes another's father, and a fruit becomes another's seed. Even so, the six consciousness realms and the mind realms are all contained in one, so in essence, it would become seventeen or twelve realms, why establish it as eighteen realms? Although it is so, however, in order to better establish the basis of the six, it is considered that the realms are eighteen. The dwelling of the five consciousness realms

If the earth element is the eye element and so on, then the sixth, the element of mental consciousness, has no other place. Therefore, in order to thoroughly establish its place, the mental element is taught. Thus, by distinguishing the place, the dweller, and the object, it becomes the eighteen elements. Among them, the aggregates gather all conditioned phenomena. The aggregates of grasping gather all contaminated phenomena. The sources and elements are all phenomena. In brief, it should be known that one aggregate, source, and element gathers everything. It should be understood that the form aggregate, the mind source, and the dharma element gather all phenomena. Moreover, this gathering, no matter where it comes from, should be understood as being of its own nature, not of other things. Why? Because it does not possess other natures. Because it does not possess the nature of other dharmas, it is not possible to gather by what it does not possess. For example, the eye faculty is gathered by the form aggregate, the eye source and element, and the truths of suffering and origin, because it is their nature. Because it does not possess their nature, it is not gathered by other aggregates and so on. Then, if there are two eyes, ears, and noses, wouldn't it become twenty-one elements? It will not become so, because of what? Although there are two eyes and so on, because the genus, field of activity, and consciousness are the same, it is one element. Among them, the genus is the same because both are the nature of the eye. The field of activity is the same because the object of both is form. The consciousness is the same because both are the place of one eye consciousness. Therefore, the eye element is one. Similarly, it should be applied to the ears and nose as well. For the sake of beauty, two appear. Although the eyes and so on are one element, two appear for the sake of the beauty of the place. If it were not so, if the support of the eyes and ears were the same, and the nostrils became one, it would be very unsightly. The aggregates, elements, and sources have been explained.
