Wandering in this great ocean of samsara, therefore, the teacher, the Buddha Shakyamuni, taught the Abhidharma for the purpose of thoroughly distinguishing the Dharma, so it is said. Without the teaching of Abhidharma, disciples cannot thoroughly distinguish. What are the dharmas that need to be thoroughly distinguished by the teaching of Abhidharma? It is said: Dharmas are with outflows and without outflows. This is a brief summary of all dharmas. What are the dharmas with outflows? It is said: All conditioned things except the path are with outflows. Other than the truth of the path, other conditioned dharmas are with outflows. Why is that? Because on those, outflows increase. Dharmas with outflows have been explained. What are the dharmas without outflows? The truth of the path without outflows, and also the three unconditioned things. What are the three? Space and the two cessations. What are the two? Cessation through discrimination and cessation not through discrimination. Thus, space and the other three unconditioned things, and the truth of the path, are the dharmas without outflows. Because on those, outflows do not increase. Thus, the three unconditioned things have been explained. Among them, space is unobscured. Space is the nature of being unobscured, where form can move. What does cessation through discrimination separate from? Whatever is separated from dharmas with outflows is cessation through discrimination. Repeatedly examining the noble truths such as suffering is discrimination, which is a distinction of wisdom. The cessation to be attained by it is cessation through discrimination. Is there only one cessation through discrimination for all dharmas with outflows? It is said: No. Then what is it? It is each separate one. As many substances as bind, so many substances are separated. Cessation through discrimination has been explained. What permanently obstructs arising is other than cessation through discrimination. Whatever cessation other than separation permanently obstructs the arising of future dharmas is non-discrimination.

Non-analytical cessation, for example, if a person is particularly attached to one object, then other objects such as sounds, smells, tastes, and tactile sensations have passed, and therefore, the five aggregates of consciousness directed towards them cannot arise either, because they have no power to focus on past objects. Therefore, these respective non-analytical cessations are obtained because the conditions are not sufficient. The three types of unconditioned dharmas have been explained. As for what is said, "all conditioned dharmas except the path are tainted," what are those conditioned dharmas? Conditioned dharmas are the five aggregates such as form, namely the aggregate of form, the aggregate of feeling, the aggregate of perception, the aggregate of mental formations, and the aggregate of consciousness. These are the conditioned dharmas, which are made by the aggregation and conjunction of various conditions. What is called "that itself is time and the basis of speech, as well as definite arising and having a basis," that itself is conditioned dharmas. Because of past, present, and future, or because of being consumed by impermanence, it is time. Speech is language. Its basis is name, because it can hold things with meaning, so conditioned dharmas are called the basis of speech. Definite arising is definite arising, which is the nirvana of all conditioned dharmas. Because these exist in this, they are those with definite arising. Because they have causes, they are those with a basis, because the word "basis" means cause. Thus, these are the names of conditioned dharmas. Furthermore, these conditioned dharmas themselves are: those that are tainted are the aggregates of grasping. If one asks what this accomplishes, then whatever are the aggregates of grasping are the aggregates themselves, but there are also those that are not aggregates of grasping, namely the untainted conditioned dharmas. Among them, grasping refers to afflictions. Because they arise from afflictions, they are the aggregates of grasping, like a fire of grass and chaff; or because they depend on afflictions, like the king's people. Or, because grasping arises from these, they are the aggregates of grasping, like trees with flowers and fruits. Tainted
