Because it cannot ripen again. Just as a flower is the proximate cause of producing fruit, so too should it be understood that the ripening of actions arises. The basis is like food and drink that has been prepared. Just as food and drink that has already been prepared is only to be fully enjoyed and not produced again, so too is the basis of what is called ripening. Furthermore, it is impossible for ripening to be connected with other ripening in other lifetimes. If it were connected, there would be no liberation. Moreover, the continuum of life, in that way, arises dependently. It is like this: the intermediate existence (antarabhava), the existence of birth (janmabhava), the subsequent existence (uttarabhava), and the existence of death (maranabhava) do not exceed the four existences (bhava). Those have already been explained. Among those four existences, the existence of birth is afflicted. It is unique. With which affliction? Because it is satisfied by all afflictions. Because the existence of birth is filled, by all such afflictions, there is no affliction that obstructs the connection and binding of oneself. The other three, the intermediate existence and the other three existences, are all three: virtuous, afflicted, and unspecified. Furthermore, among these existences, which corresponds to which? The three formless realms, except for the intermediate existence. In the formless realm, because of where one is going, there is no other place that is clearly established for the intermediate existence to be fully explained. The number of the desire realm and the form realm is not mentioned, so it appears that the four existences are fully present. The dependent arising of sentient beings has been extensively explained as it is. Furthermore, how do sentient beings abide? It is said: Beings abide by food. The Blessed One himself, having realized enlightenment through wisdom, declared one dharma, which is as follows: Sentient beings abide by food. This is a sutra statement. What are the foods? There are four kinds of food: solid food, coarse and subtle food. The subtle is because the intermediate beings eat fragrance, and because the gods and the beings of the first kalpa do not have a common cause, in the sand.

Like pouring sesame oil, because it is subtle, it is subtle, it is for children and those born from warmth and moisture. Touch is the second. Thinking in the mind is the third. Identification is the fourth. Also, that is the food of the desire realm. In the form and formless realms, those who are free from desire are not for being born there. That is also the nature of the three sources of birth, the taste, smell, and tactile objects enjoyed in desire, cut into a mouthful with the mouth and nose, made into a mouthful and disappeared, so everything is food for a mouthful. It is not a source of form. Why? Because it does not hold self-liberation. What is called food is what benefits one's own senses and the great elements. When form does not exist, it does not benefit one's own senses or its great elements either, because it is not an object, so what need is there to even mention looking at others? When seeing it produces happiness and joy in the mind, at that time also, because of focusing on it, happiness is experienced, so it becomes the food of touch, not form. Non-returners and Arhat liberators, even if they see very pleasing food, there is no benefit, also because of this reason. Touch, thought, and identification are, the defiled foods are all in the three realms. Why is it not undefiled? Because it transcends the nature of food. The meaning of nourishing existence is the meaning of food, as it is said in the sutra: These four foods are to help sentient beings exist, be harmed, and seek existence. Therefore, the undefiled Dharma is not like that, so it is not food. Temporary appearance is also clearly the birth of sentient beings. What is seeking existence? Mind-born and seeking existence, seeking fragrance, intermediate existence and accomplishment. The Blessed One said that intermediate existence refers to these. That is produced from the mind, so it is called mind-born, and it does not have semen and blood etc. as a cause at all. Seeking existence
