The branch of is dependent origination. In that case, since it is cause and effect, all the branches are also established as both. Then, what is the meaning of "ignorance"? If it is said that whatever is not ignorance, then the eyes and so on would also become faults. If it is said that it is without knowledge, then, in that case, it would become nothing at all, which is also not possible. Therefore, ignorance is another dharma that is contrary to knowledge, just like unkindness, lies, and so on. Just as the opposite of a friend, some become the opposite of a friend, and some are neither enemies nor without friendship. What is called upright is truth. The word that is contrary to this is a lie, not dharma, not meaning, not action, etc., just as being contrary to dharma, etc., ignorance should also be regarded as another dharma that is contrary to knowledge. Where does this come from? It comes from showing the nature of dependent origination. Furthermore, for the sake of words such as "pervasiveness," the sutra says that ignorance is pervasiveness, bondage, subtle increase, leakage, river, and combination. If it is merely non-existence, it will not become like that, and the eyes and so on are not, therefore, ignorance is another dharma. For example, just as saying that a bad wife is not a wife, and saying that a bad son is not a son, ignorance is also like that. Because it is seeing, it is not bad wisdom. Degraded wisdom is affliction. If it is the nature of seeing, then ignorance is unreasonable. Then, whatever is not seeing, does it become ignorance? That is also unreasonable. Why? Because it is the same as seeing. If ignorance becomes wisdom, then the two natures of wisdom will not be the same, because it is not the same as seeing. This can also prove that, in order to show that wisdom is the cause of affliction, the sutra says that the mind defiled by desire is not liberated, and the wisdom defiled by ignorance is not pure, which also shows that wisdom itself is the affliction of wisdom (Sanskrit: prajñā, Romanized Sanskrit: prajñā, literal Chinese meaning: wisdom).
