Where does it say? I give birth to five sons at night, and similarly, I give birth to five sons during the day, and even when they eat, they cannot completely satisfy me, so it is said. Furthermore, when asked which of all places of birth is the most numerous, it is said: It is birth by transformation. That is the direction of the two and three paths, and all intermediate existences. What is meant by the term 'intermediate existence'? Between the two existences of death and birth, that is the intermediate existence. In the interval between the existence of death and birth, the body manifestly comes into being, and because it is an intermediate state of going in order to obtain birth in another place, it is called the intermediate existence. How is it that what has already been born is not considered born? Because it has not reached the place to be traveled to. The intermediate existence is not born. Approaching is called birth, but this intermediate existence has not approached the place to be traveled to, therefore it is not born. What is the place to be traveled to here? It is where the ripening result is cast, manifest, and complete. Other schools say that even the interval from the existence of death to birth is born, but this is not accepted. Why? Because of reason and scripture. Here, first, relying on reason, it is said: Because it is in accordance with the continuity of grain, it does not arise from a severed existence. The phenomena that exist in continuity are seen to arise in other places without interrupting the continuity, like the continuity of grain. Therefore, the continuity of sentient beings also has the characteristic of arising in other places without interrupting the continuity. If the continuity is severed, just as the reflection of an image does not appear in a mirror, similarly, is there an existence between the existence of death and the existence of birth? Because the image is not established, and because it is dissimilar, it is not an example. The so-called image also appears as a different color, so it is not established. Even if it were established, it is not an example because it is dissimilar. First, how is it not established? Because there is no duality in being one together. In the same place, the image and reflection of the mirror both appear because the dependent origination is different. Two images together in one place do not exist. If these gather, what kind of power is that

It also appears that the differences in the power of phenomena are inconceivable. The statement "because it is not established for the time being" is like that. If it is not an analogy because it is not the same, it is because it is not constant. For form, there is no constant transformation into an image, but there is in the constant of a mirror. Because it exists in an instant, it is not like the existence of death and birth. For the constant, it is said that the constant arises uninterruptedly in other places, and what is not constant is not, so the analogy of the image is not similar. Because it arises from two. From the two causes of form and mirror, an image arises, relying on the main cause. Similarly, the existence of birth is different from the existence of death, and it does not arise from one main cause and two causes. Therefore, this is also a dissimilar analogy. External semen and blood, etc., which are without consciousness, are also not suitable to be called the main cause. Where do those who are born miraculously arise in the sky, and how do we examine what and two causes there? For the time being, from the perspective of reason, it is not desirable now for the existence of birth to arise from the interruption of the existence of death. Therefore, the intermediate existence is indeed existent. Singing and saying, in the Sutra of Seven Existences, it is said: the existence of hell, the existence of animals, the existence of hungry ghosts, the existence of gods, the existence of humans, the existence of karma, and the intermediate existence. If you say that you do not quote this sutra, then, if three situations manifest from "Gandharva," a fetus will form in the mother's womb, that is, the mother has the ability to reproduce, the parents have intercourse, gather, and the Gandharva is also close to existence. Apart from the intermediate existence, what other Gandharva is there? If you say that you quote "the decaying aggregates are close to existence," that is not possible, because it contradicts the Horse Son Sutra. If you say that you do not quote that sutra either, then, if there is no intermediate existence, then how can it be said in the previously mentioned "Five Never-Returners" that "the Never-Returner attains Nirvana in the intermediate state"?
