It is because of the perception that it is neither suffering nor happiness. There are sentient beings with form who have different bodies and similar perceptions, such as the gods of the Brahma realm, those who were born first. This is the second abode of consciousness. All those who were born first think, "We were born from Brahma." Brahma also thinks, "These were born from me." Because the cause of perception is not different, the perception is the same. Brahma is different in terms of water surface, the flesh and blood of the body, speech, and the clothes worn, and his retinue is also different, so the bodies are different. There are sentient beings with form who have the same body but different perceptions, such as the gods of clear light. This is the third abode of consciousness. Here, because the "edge" is mentioned, it should be understood that the entire second dhyana is mentioned. If not, then where are the small light and immeasurable light, etc., established in which abode of consciousness? Because the color, signs, and shapes are not different, the bodies are the same. Because of perceiving happiness, and perceiving neither happiness nor suffering, the perceptions are different. Those beings in the actual ground are weary of the mental pleasure, so they manifest equanimity in the near-attainment. After being weary of the equanimity of the near-attainment, they again manifest the mental pleasure of the actual ground. Therefore, it is said that those beings have different perceptions. Or, in the assembly of the gods of clear light, some beings who are born not long ago, are not familiar with the destruction of this world, nor are they familiar with arising, they are afraid when they see the flames, thinking, "Will the flames burn down Brahma's empty palace and come here?" Therefore, they are discouraged and depressed. In the assembly of the gods of clear light, some beings who have been born for a long time, are familiar with the destruction of this world, and are also familiar with arising, they say to the frightened beings, "Friends, do not be afraid! This flame has burned down Brahma's empty palace before, and then disappeared." Therefore,

Those are because flames come, and because of perceiving as reversed, and because of perceiving between fear and non-fear, it is called different consciousness. There are sentient beings with form who have similar bodies and similar consciousness, such as the gods of Good Birth. This is the fourth abode of consciousness. What is called similar consciousness is perceiving as happiness. Thus, the three formless realms as spoken of in the sutras, and those seven, are the seven abodes of consciousness. Why are the remaining ones not abodes of consciousness? Because of what? The remaining ones, that is the whole, that is the distinction. What are the remaining ones? The evil destinies, and the fourth dhyana, and the peak of existence, these are not abodes of consciousness because there is complete distinction of consciousness. What is called complete distinction? It is that which completely destroys consciousness. In the evil destinies, feeling is completely separated, because it is harmful. In the fourth dhyana, there is absence of perception and the absorption of absence of perception. In the peak of existence, there is the absorption of cessation, because the continuum of mind is severed. Again it is said, where those who dwell here want to go, and those who dwell there do not want to transmigrate, that is said to be an abode of consciousness. In the evil destinies, neither is present. In the fourth dhyana, ordinary beings among sentient beings who want to transmigrate want to enter into a state of non-perception, while the noble ones are in the Pure Abodes. The peak of existence is because the activity is not clear, therefore those are not called abodes of consciousness. The seven abodes of consciousness as described above, and the peak of existence, and sentient beings without perception, are said to be the nine places of sentient beings. Because in these places, sentient beings dwell freely everywhere. It is not other, because of dwelling and not wanting. What is other? It is the evil destinies, in those places, sentient beings do not want to, but are forced to dwell by the demons of karma. Therefore, dwelling like unbelievers, those are not places of sentient beings, like a prison. In other sutras, the place is consciousness.

It is said that there are seven abodes of consciousness. In other scriptures it says: Abodes are also four. What are the four that are mentioned? It is that consciousness, by abiding, draws near to form, draws near to feeling, draws near to perception, and draws near to mental formations. What is their nature? They are, in order, the four aggregates with defilements. They are also their own places, not in other places. Why? Because the abode is the support, consciousness does not rely on the aggregates of unequal places. Why is consciousness not called the abode of consciousness? Because the complete abandonment of the abider is the abode. The abider itself is not called the abode, just as the king himself is not the king's throne. However, if not distinguished, then the consciousness that enters with manifest delight in the aggregates gathered by the birth-source is the abode of consciousness is consciousness. If distinguished separately, then, just as form and so on will completely afflict consciousness, but not consciousness alone. Therefore, in the four abodes of consciousness, it is not said that consciousness alone abides. Furthermore, the Blessed One said that the four abodes of consciousness are the nature of a field. The exhaustion of consciousness with near-taking is the nature of a seed, and the meaning is that the seed itself becomes established as the nature of the field of the seed, which does not seem possible. Also, do the four abodes of consciousness include the seven, or do the seven include the four? Neither do the seven include the four, nor do the four include the seven, inclusion is four alternatives. If inclusion is used, it should be understood as four alternatives, that is, the seven include but the four do not, and so on. The first is the consciousness that is in the seven. The second is the evil destinies, the fourth dhyana, and the peak of existence, the aggregates other than consciousness. The third is the four aggregates in the seven. The fourth is excluding those aspects. Whatever descriptions of different distinctions such as beings are said to be the three realms, there it is born from the womb.
