Its determination is like this: the sense organs without desire, the soundless subtle particles are eight substances. The smallest among the accumulated forms is called a subtle particle, and what is smaller than that is invisible. If it has neither sense organs nor sound, then in the desire realm it will arise with eight substances, and not without any one of them. These eight are: The four great elements and the four derived from the elements: form, smell, taste, and touch. If the extremely subtle particle is soundless but possesses sense organs, then it will arise with nine or ten substances. Regarding this, first, the nine substances possess the body's sense organ, because this body has a sense organ, it is called possessing the body's sense organ. These nine substances are those eight substances plus the body's sense organ. The ten substances possess another sense organ, if the subtle particle has another sense organ, then it has ten substances, which are those nine substances plus any one of the eye, ear, nose, or tongue sense organs. If these subtle particles arise with sound, then they will arise in order with nine, ten, or eleven substances. In the form realm, it is said that there are no smell and taste, therefore, the subtle particles there have six, seven, or eight substances, which has already been said, so it will not be repeated. The determination of forms, arising together, has been explained. The remaining will be spoken, regarding this, first, mind and mental factors are determined together. These cannot arise without each other. All compounded natures must be added with "together." Whatever form, mind and mental factors, and a few non-associated things arise, all of these arise together with the compounded nature. Obtaining or attainment arises only together with showing sentient beings, and not with others. Or, this means belonging to difference. Speaking of mental factors, what are mental factors? There are five kinds of mental factors, how so? Because the grounds are many and different. Mental factors are the mental factors of many grounds, the mental factors of unwholesome grounds, the mental factors of wholesome grounds, and afflictions.

There are five types of many-ground dharmas and minor affliction-ground dharmas. "Ground" refers to the place of arising; that which is the place of arising for something arises from the mind of that thing, hence it is called "ground." Here, these are many grounds, therefore they are many-ground dharmas, which are those that arise from all sentient beings. What are those that arise from all sentient beings? They are: feeling, thought, conception, intention, contact, wisdom, mindfulness, attention, conviction, and concentration. These ten dharmas are momentary and are felt by all sentient beings. Among these, feeling is of three types: pleasure, pain, and neither pleasure nor pain. Thought is the activity of the mind. Conception is understanding, which is to grasp the characteristics of an object. Intention is the desire to act. Contact is born from the union of object, sense faculty, and consciousness. Wisdom is intelligence, which discriminates dharmas well. Mindfulness is not forgetting the object of focus. Attention is the mind's engagement. Conviction is belief. Concentration is one-pointedness of mind. The activities of the mind and mental factors are subtle, so it is difficult to determine them completely even in a continuum, let alone in a moment. Even with colored objects, it is difficult to determine the differences in taste for some things that are perceived by the senses, such as medicines with many flavors, let alone for non-colored dharmas that are taken up by the mind. The many-ground dharmas have been explained. Because this is the section on wholesome many-ground dharmas: faith, conscientiousness, great pliancy, equanimity, shame, embarrassment, the two roots, non-harming, and diligence are always towards virtue. These dharmas arise from a wholesome mind, therefore they are called wholesome many-ground dharmas. Among these, faith is the clarity of mind. Conscientiousness is cultivating virtue or ground dharmas. Great pliancy is the mind's adaptability. Equanimity is the mind's evenness. Shame and embarrassment will be explained later. The two roots are the roots of virtue of non-attachment and non-hatred.
