There are two types: tasting and purity, and those that are in accordance. The uncontaminated is the absence itself. Among them, tasting in accordance is associated with desire. Tasting is desire. Worldly virtuous mind is purity. The substance of worldly virtue in equanimity is called purity, because it possesses white qualities such as non-attachment. Furthermore, what does the mind that tastes and is in accordance with taste? It is the one who tastes. For those in equanimity, the one that has just passed is the one who tastes, arising from what is to be tasted. What is used to taste is equanimity. The uncontaminated is transcendent. The substance of transcendence in equanimity is the uncontaminated. Among these substances of equanimity, the meditations possess limbs. The formless ones do not. Among them, the first has five. The first meditation has five limbs: investigation and analysis, joy, bliss, and concentration. Investigation, analysis, joy, bliss, and one-pointedness of mind, these are the five limbs. Concentration is both a limb and a meditation. The remaining ones are only limbs, just as the four limbs of an army are, the five limbs of meditation are similar to them. The second possesses limbs, joy and so on are four. The second meditation has four limbs: inner clarity, joy, bliss, and one-pointedness of mind. The third's equanimity, mindfulness, awareness, bliss, and abiding are five. The limbs of the third meditation are equanimity, mindfulness, awareness, bliss, and concentration. What is called "abiding" is a synonym for concentration, as it is said in the sutra, what is correct concentration? It is when the mind and mental factors abide correctly. The last is neither bliss nor suffering, equanimity, mindfulness, and concentration are four. The last is the fourth meditation, its limbs are the feeling that is neither bliss nor suffering, and pure equanimity, pure appearance, and pure concentration, there are four. Thus, meditation

The branches of the first and third dhyanas are five, and the branches of the second and fourth dhyanas are four, so these are the eighteen branches of dhyana. That is how it is in terms of names. In terms of substance, there are eleven. In terms of substance, the first dhyana has five. In the second, inner clarity increases. In the third, equanimity, mindfulness, awareness, and virtues increase. In the fourth, the feeling of neither pleasure nor pain increases. Therefore, if it is said that the branches of the first dhyana are the same as the branches of the second dhyana, there are four possibilities. The first possibility is vitarka and vicara. The second possibility is inner clarity. The third possibility is joy, happiness, and one-pointedness of mind. The fourth possibility is the dharmas that belong to the path of explanation. Similarly, the branches of all the dhyanas should also be combined with each other. Therefore, is the happiness of the third dhyana said to be another substance? Because its happiness is a feeling, and it has been thoroughly cultivated by the first two dhyanas. The happiness of the first and second dhyanas is called thorough cultivation. What is the dharma called inner clarity? It is faith and conviction. Therefore, after attaining the second dhyana, the arising of the belief that one will definitely be able to emerge from the state of meditative absorption is called inner clarity here. What is said to be joy is mental happiness, how should this be understood? What else is it? How do other schools think? How do other schools think? Joy is another dharma that arises from the mind, while mental happiness is considered to be the happiness of the third dhyana. The happiness of dhyana should not be mental happiness, because there are two kinds of bodies, so it is joy and happiness. In the Sutra of Transformation, the Blessed One taught the third dhyana, saying, 'Here, the faculty of mental happiness here completely turns into joy.' The Blessed One taught. The Blessed One taught that in the fourth dhyana, the faculty of happiness will cease. It is also said, 'Also abandoning happiness, having previously abandoned suffering, and with pleasure and displeasure also ceasing.' Therefore, again

Thirdly, there is no faculty of mental ease. Therefore, joy itself is mental ease, not pleasure. Furthermore, do defiled meditations also have the limbs described in this way? No, they do not. What do they lack? For defiled ones, there is no joy, no higher seeing and clear knowing, no mindfulness, and no pure equanimity-mindfulness. The first dhyana does not have the joy and pleasure born of detachment, because it is not detached from defilements. The second does not have inner purity, because it is disturbed by defilements. The third does not have mindfulness and clear knowing, because it is completely deluded by the pleasure of defilement. The fourth does not have completely pure mindfulness, because it is defiled by defilements. For the moment, some say this: Some say there is excellent practice of equanimity. Some say that the first and second defiled dhyanas do not have excellent practice. The third and fourth do not have equanimity, because they are grounds of much virtue. The Blessed One said that the three dhyanas are unstable because they are flawed. Because the fourth is freed from eight faults, it is unwavering. What are those faults? Conceptualization, analysis, breath, and the four beginning with pleasure. Conceptualization, analysis, pleasure, suffering, mental ease, mental unease, inhalation, and exhalation. The fourth dhyana does not have any of these eight faults, therefore it is called unwavering. The second dhyana is called mental ease because joy is mentioned. The third is called pleasure. The fourth is called equanimity. Are the feelings of the meditative absorptions the same as those of the arising meditations? No. How so? In the arising meditations, there are mental ease and equanimity, equanimity-mental unease, and equanimity-equanimity feelings. In the arising first dhyana, there are three feelings: the pleasure of the three consciousnesses, the mental ease of the mental realm, and
