And, to contemplate the aspect of definitely arising. The paths of immediate consequence are coarse because they are coarse in the lower speech, and because they take suffering, and because they are seen as like a thick wall, because they are not tranquil, and because one must strive with great effort. Because they are not abundant, and because they take very many bad states, they become discordant, therefore they take suffering. Just as a wall definitely does not arise, so it is by that. Because it does not definitely arise from that, it is like a thick wall. The opposite of those is the aspect of tranquility and abundance, and definite arising. What came incidentally is complete. The common meaning should be stated: What arises after the knowledge of exhaustion? If from the unmoving knowledge of exhaustion, arises the wisdom of non-arising. If an Arhat is of the nature of immovability, then after that knowledge of exhaustion arises the wisdom of non-arising. If it is not so? The knower of exhaustion is like the non-learner's view. But if he is not of the nature of immovability, then after the knowledge of exhaustion arises the knowledge of exhaustion itself or the correct view of the non-learner. Because there is complete deterioration, the wisdom of non-arising does not arise. What about those who are of the nature of immovability? Is it only non-arising? That, for all Arhats, those of the nature of immovability, sometimes the wisdom of non-arising itself arises, and sometimes the correct view of the non-learner arises. Thus, what is said to be the four fruits, whose fruit is it? It is the fruit of a renunciate. What is called the fruit of a renunciate? The path of the renunciate, without defilement. The path without outflows is said to arise. By that, one becomes a renunciate through the door of truly pacifying afflictions, and it is also said in the sutra: 'By this, one has pacified in various ways the sins and non-virtuous dharmas that increase until old age and death, therefore it is called a renunciate.' Also, the fruit of that renunciate is conditioned and unconditioned. The fruit of a renunciate is the conditioned and the unconditioned, and although those are said to be four in the sutra, nevertheless those are eighty-nine. What are those? The path of liberation together with all the exhausted ones, the seeing

In order to abandon the afflictions to be abandoned by seeing, there are eight uninterrupted paths and eight liberation paths. In order to abandon the afflictions to be abandoned by meditation, on each of the nine grounds, nine kinds of afflictions must be abandoned. Therefore, there are corresponding numbers of uninterrupted paths and liberation paths. Among them, the uninterrupted paths are Śrāmaṇas, and the liberation paths, because they are fruits that conform to their cause and can produce the fruit of a person, are the conditioned fruits of Śrāmaṇas. Abandoning these afflictions is the conditioned fruit of Śrāmaṇas. In this way, they become eighty-nine. If so, is it necessary to supplement the words spoken by the Buddha? No, even if the fruit is mostly like this, the fruit is established as four because there are five reasons. It is said that the Blessed One establishes as fruit in whatever stage of the path of abandonment there are five reasons. What are these five reasons? Abandoning the previous path of the fruit, obtaining other paths and the total collection of cessation, obtaining the eight wisdoms, and meditating on the sixteen aspects. Abandoning the previous path and obtaining the path that was not previously obtained is because the path of entering the stream is abandoned and the path of the fruit is obtained. The total collection of abandonment is because one obtains one of all the obtained objects. Obtaining the eight wisdoms simultaneously is due to the knowledge of the Dharma and the knowledge of the subsequent. Meditating on the sixteen aspects refers to impermanence and so on. These five reasons exist in all the fruits that are established as the four fruits. If only the unpolluted path is Śrāmaṇa, then how can the two fruits obtained by the worldly path be Śrāmaṇa fruits? Because the attainment of the worldly path is mixed and holds the attainment of the unpolluted path, it is a fruit. The fruit of once-returner or non-returner is not only the abandonment of the fruit by the worldly path, but the fruit abandoned by the path of seeing should also be mixed in it, because all the obtained objects are gathered in one fruit. Because of these two reasons,
