It is like an uninterrupted path, and the third is like a path of complete liberation. Thus, if one cultivates the fourth dhyana, then by its power, other dhyanas can also be cultivated alternately. Initially, in the three continents of the desire realm, one can cultivate alternately, and later, after complete decline, one can also cultivate alternately in the form realm. Why is dhyana cultivated alternately? It is for the sake of arising and abiding, and also because of the fear of afflictions. Due to these three reasons, dhyanas need to be cultivated alternately. Non-returners with sharp faculties do so in order to be born in the Pure Abodes, and in order to abide happily in the present dharma, they cultivate the dharma alternately. Those with dull faculties also do so because they fear afflictions, and in order to prevent complete degeneration by prolonging the samadhi that is like tasting flavors, they cultivate alternately. Arhats with sharp faculties do so in order to abide happily in the present dharma. Those with dull faculties also do so because they fear afflictions, in order to prevent complete degeneration. Furthermore, why are there only five kinds of beings born in the Pure Abodes? Because it is said that the cultivation of the fourth dhyana is done alternately. This is because there are five forms. The five birthplaces of the Pure Abodes. The alternate cultivation of dhyana is divided into small, medium, large, very large, and extremely large differences, so there are five forms. In the first, there are the uncontaminated and contaminated, and the uncontaminated, manifesting three minds. In the second, there are six. In the third, there are nine. In the fourth, there are twelve. In the fifth, there are fifteen minds manifested. Their results are successively the five Pure Abodes, and from those dhyanas, it is by the power of the contaminated dhyana that one is born in those places. Others say that it is five because the first, etc., have differences. In order to attain cessation, the non-returner desires to realize it with the body. Any non-returner who has attained cessation, because he has realized with the body the dharma that is similar to nirvana, is called one who realizes with the body. How does one realize with the body? Because there is no mind.

It is because it arises depending on mind and body. Having exhausted the eight obstacles of the peak of existence, one enters the state of Arhat. Furthermore, the non-returner, starting from being free from desire from one aspect of the first dhyana, up to the eight aspects of the peak of existence, enters the state of Arhat through the path of abandonment. The ninth uninterrupted path is also, when abiding in the uninterrupted path that abandons the ninth aspect of the peak of existence, it is only entering the state of Arhat. Because that uninterrupted path is like a vajra, it destroys all subtle defilements. It is called the Vajra-like Samadhi. Although it is not that it has already destroyed, it can destroy everything, but it has the power to destroy everything, and it is uninterrupted, because it is the most excellent of all paths. What is it that is to be abandoned by the Vajra-like Samadhi, which is said to be the ninth aspect of the peak of existence? That is the attainment of exhaustion and the knowledge of exhaustion. The ninth aspect is the attainment of the exhaustion, and the knowledge of exhaustion arises simultaneously. Because at the end of the Vajra-like Samadhi, the non-learning liberation path arises, therefore that is the first attainment of the exhaustion of all defilements, and it arises simultaneously, so it is called the knowledge of exhaustion. At that time, he is a non-learning Arhat. Again, that one who has entered the state of Arhat, after the knowledge of exhaustion arises, because there is no learning for the sake of other fruits, therefore he is a non-learner. Because he is worthy of being offered to by all those with desire, therefore he is an Arhat, he has attained the fruit of Arhat. Therefore, the other seven types of individuals mentioned earlier are all for the sake of exhausting all defilements, having the nature of learning the three higher trainings, higher morality, higher mind, and higher wisdom, therefore it is established as a learner, those are the nature of morality, samadhi, and wisdom. The path of meditation is said to be of two types, mundane and supramundane. By which path does the learner obtain freedom from desire from which realms? From the supramundane peak of existence, one obtains freedom from desire. Not from the mundane, why? Because above that
