It is abandoned by meditating on the path. If the afflictions are not abandoned and are completely bound, then these two are called entering the fruit of stream-entry. Cutting off five types. If one has previously meditated on the worldly path and acts as an antidote to the afflictions to be abandoned, having abandoned up to five types, then likewise, it is called entering the first fruit. The second fruit. Up to the ninth category is exhausted. It is called the second because of the second. If these two have previously abandoned six, seven, or eight types, then these two are called entering the second fruit. What is the second? It is the fruit of once-returner. From the desire realm or the higher realms, the one free from attachment enters the third fruit. If one is free from attachment to all nine categories of the desire realm, or if one is free from desire attachment from the realm above, up to the realm of nothingness, then these two are called entering the third fruit. What is the third? It is the fruit of non-returner. Whoever enters where? For the sixteen, they abide in the fruit. If sixteen minds arise, then for these two, they are neither called following faith nor following dharma, nor are they called stream-enterers. So what are they like? They abide in the fruit, that is, whether one has entered the fruit of stream-entry, the fruit of once-returner, or the fruit of non-returner, at that time, they are abiding in the fruit. An Arhat cannot be attained initially, because what should be abandoned by meditating on the path of seeing is not abandoned, and also, it is impossible to be free from desire from the peak of existence. At that time, the faculties are sharp or dull, and one attains through faith or seeing. The one with dull faculties who previously followed faith is then called faith-liberated. The one with sharp faculties who previously followed the dharma is then called attained by seeing, because faith and wisdom are more liberated, and because they are well distinguished by seeing. Why is it that when sixteen minds arise and five types of afflictions are abandoned, one is still called a stream-enterer, and enters the fruit of once-returner?

If asked, why is it not called "entry"? For what reason? Because one dwells in the fruit, but has not obtained the superior fruit. Because of dwelling in a superior fruit, not striving is not "entry." Because one has obtained the fruit, but has not obtained the path of the superior fruit, it is thus certain that dwelling in the fruit, in order to become a superior fruit, one does not diligently seek to obtain other fruits. Before that, it is not called "entry." Similarly, other fruits should also be understood. If someone is free from desire from the third dhyana, relying on the lower realms and necessarily entering, then he will undoubtedly manifest the path of the superior fruit. If it is not so, if it arises before that, it will not possess the feeling of pleasure. For the time being, the establishment of the individual who necessarily enters, who is free from desire from most realms, and free from desire from desire, is thus. Now, the gradual entry is to be spoken of, therefore, for the time being, these are to be established. As previously shown, the nine afflictions of the desire realm, similarly: In each ground, there are nine faults, Up to the peak of existence. How are the faults, So too are the qualities. In each ground, their antidotes—the path of immediate result and the path of liberation—these aspects of qualities are also nine times nine. How so? Small, medium, and large, etc., Because of the differences in small, etc. Small, medium, and large, these three fundamental aspects, each of which is further divided into small, medium, and large, are established as nine. That is, the smallest of the small aspects, the medium of the small aspects, the large of the small aspects, the small of the medium aspects, the medium of the medium aspects, the large of the medium aspects, the small of the large aspects, the medium of the large aspects, and the large of the large aspects. Among them, the initial stage of the small path can eliminate the largest of the large afflictions, and similarly, the final stage of the large path can eliminate the smallest of the small afflictions. Because it is impossible for the large path to arise initially, and after it has arisen, it is impossible for large afflictions to exist. For example, dirt on clothes.
