And with focus and meditation, and the realms of desire. The object of focus is the appearance of those who act in desire. What is appearance? It is color and shape, therefore it is established as focusing on meaning. It arises only among humans, and not among other sentient beings. What need is there to mention other realms? Even in those realms, it is not in the unpleasant sounds of the north. By name alone, it is established as an unpleasant appearance. By what does one focus on a time that is not the time, one focuses on that time. If it is a dharma that does not arise, then the object of focus is the three times. Because of faith and attention, it is with outflows. Because of familiarity and unfamiliarity, it is obtained from detachment and arises from combination. The characteristics of unpleasantness have already been explained in detail. Inhaling, exhaling, mindfulness, wisdom, the object of the five grounds is wind. The object of desire. Inhaling is inhaling breath, which is the entry of wind. Exhaling is exhaling breath, which is the exit of wind. Mindfulness of those two is mindfulness of inhaling and exhaling, which is the nature of wisdom. The word mindfulness is like mindfulness of close placement, because it is to increase its power. The grounds are five, namely the three concentrations and special meditation, and the realm of desire, because they possess equality and similarity. Its object of focus is wind. It is produced by the bodies of gods and humans in the realm of desire. Because of familiarity and unfamiliarity, it is obtained from detachment and arises from combination. If this is the only attention, then it belongs to these dharma practitioners, and not to outsiders. Because there is no scriptural authority, and one cannot understand the profound dharma oneself. That is, by six methods such as counting: counting and following, abiding and approaching, transforming and completely purifying. If it possesses six causes, then this is completely perfect. Among them, counting means abandoning attachment to inhaling and exhaling, not attending, and resting the body and mind in a natural state.

Simply by remembering, one counts from one to ten. In order to gather the mind and avoid distraction, it is neither too much nor too little. There are three faults in this: if one counts one as two, it is incomplete counting. If one counts two as one, it is over-counting. If one perceives inhaling as exhaling, or exhaling as inhaling, it is confusion. Other than these, it is correct counting. If one is distracted in between, one should count again from the beginning until one attains samadhi. What is called 'following' refers to how long the breath is when it arises or ceases. Does it pervade the entire body, or does it move in certain parts? Without preconceived notions, one follows the rhythm of inhalation and exhalation. When inhaling, it gradually enters the throat, heart, navel, waist, thighs, buttocks, and down to the feet. When exhaling, one follows the distance of a span or a fathom. Some say it is between the mandala of wind and the dispersing wind. Since this is the only thing to be mindful of, this is not reasonable. What is called 'abiding' is like a string of jewels, visualizing it as abiding from the tip of the nose to the toes. And contemplating whether this is helpful, cold, or hot. What is called 'close examination' is not merely wind, but the four great elements, and the form produced from these elements, and the mind and mental factors that depend on it, closely examining the five aggregates. What is called 'transformation' is transforming the mind focused on wind, from higher to higher, rightly joining the roots of virtue with the path. What is called 'complete purification' is entering the path of seeing, and so on. Others say that transformation is from the mindfulnesses, and so on, up to the vajra-like samadhi. Complete purification is the knowledge of exhaustion, and so on. Counting and following, abiding and, contemplating and transforming, and complete purification.
