That which exists is other than ultimate existence. That which, when broken into parts, the cognition of it no longer occurs, that is conventionally existent, like a vase. When it is broken into shards, the cognition of a vase no longer occurs. That which, when the mind excludes other phenomena, the cognition of it no longer occurs, that too should be understood as conventionally existent, like water. When the mind excludes phenomena such as form, the cognition of water no longer occurs. It is precisely because the conventional ascribes names to them that when it is said that due to the conventional, a vase and water exist, it is said to be true, not false, and that is conventional truth. Other than that is ultimate truth, that which, whether broken down or whether the mind excludes other phenomena, the cognition of it still occurs, that is ultimately existent, like form. Even when broken down into minute particles and when the mind excludes phenomena such as form, the cognition of the nature of form still occurs. Similarly, that should also be applied to feelings and so forth. Because those are ultimately existent, they are ultimate truth. The truths have been explained. Next, how those are seen will be explained: Abiding in discipline, possessing hearing and thought, For meditation, one should apply oneself diligently. Those who wish to see the truths first keep the precepts. Then, they engage in hearing or listening to teachings that accord with seeing the truths. Having heard, they think about it without reversing the meaning. Having thought, they diligently apply themselves to the samadhis of meditation. Thus, relying on the wisdom arising from hearing, the wisdom arising from thinking is born. Relying on the wisdom arising from thinking, that arising from meditation is born. What are the characteristics of those wisdoms? The object of the mind arising from hearing and so forth is name, meaning, and both. Focusing on the name is known as the wisdom arising from hearing. Focusing on both name and meaning is the wisdom arising from thinking, sometimes letters lead to meaning, sometimes meaning leads to letters. That arising from meditation is focusing on the meaning itself, it does not rely on letters but engages with the meaning. Furthermore, how does one who diligently strives in meditation in that way perfect meditation?

If so, it is said: possessing two kinds of restraint. If restraining is done with both body and mind, it is from completely restraining from the noise and unwholesome thoughts. Then, for whom is it easy to do these two kinds of restraint? It is easy for those who are content with little desire, but not for those who are not content and have great greed. Then, what is discontentment? What is great greed? Greed and discontentment even when something is obtained, great desire for what is not obtained. Those who follow the scriptures, obtaining good Dharma robes and so on, and repeatedly desiring them, this is discontentment. Desiring those things that have not been obtained is known as great greed. The opposite of this is the antidote, liberation from discontentment and greed, know that this is their antidote, namely contentment and little desire. These two do not belong to the three realms, they are stainless. Combined with "their antidote," they exist when not connected with the three. Discontentment and great greed actually act in desire. Then, what is the nature of these two, contentment and little desire? Non-attachment. If these two have the nature of non-attachment, then it is a noble lineage. Combined with "non-attachment," because the noble ones are born from this, it is the four noble lineages, and they are all of the nature of non-attachment. Among these noble lineages, the first three are the nature of contentment, that is, being content with Dharma robes, alms, and bedding. The fourth noble lineage is delight in renunciation and meditation. How does this become the nature of non-attachment? Because it turns its back on attachment to existence and desire. What else did the Blessed One show with the four noble lineages? The first three are conduct, and the last one is action. The Lord of Dharma, the Blessed One, completely abandoned the boundaries of his own conduct and actions, and striving to attain liberation, therefore, for the disciples who made promises, both the boundaries of conduct and actions were restrained, with the three noble lineages restraining the three conducts, and with the fourth restraining actions. If one does this action according to this conduct, one will soon attain liberation, thus it was proclaimed. Why is it necessary to restrain such inquiries and actions? Because of craving.
