No. If those themselves become the cause of consciousness, it can also be said that Deva-given knows. The noble ones also spoke of those as names for the purpose of establishing terminology. Then, what does consciousness do when the sutra says that consciousness knows by consciousness? It does nothing at all. Just as the fruit does nothing at all, but conforms to the cause in order to obtain its own nature, so also consciousness does nothing at all, but it is said to know the object in order to obtain its own nature. What is the similarity here? It is its own aspect. Therefore, although it arises from the sense faculty, it is not the sense faculty that is said to know the object. Alternatively, there also, the continuum of consciousness becomes the cause of consciousness, so there is no fault in saying that consciousness knows by consciousness, because the cause is shown as the word for the agent, just as it is said that the bell rings. Furthermore, just as a lamp goes, so also it is similar to saying that consciousness knows by consciousness. How does a lamp go? A lamp is closely attached to the continuum of flames, and it arises in other places, so it is said to go to that place. Similarly, consciousness is closely attached to the continuum of minds, and it arises in other places, so it is said to know that place. Or, just as form changes, arises, and abides, for this, the changer and the changed are not different entities, so it is similar for consciousness to change. If consciousness arises from consciousness and not from self-nature, why does it not always arise as the same, and why does it not arise in a definite order like sprouts, stems, leaves, and so on? Because the transformation of abiding is the characteristic of conditioned phenomena. Whatever constantly transforms the continuum is the nature of conditioned phenomena. If it were not so, if similar body and mind arose from those who are absorbed in perfect meditation, there would be no difference from the first moment.

Thereafter, it will not arise again. From where something arises, it arises only from that place, therefore the order of sentient beings is also definite. The difference in kind causes the forms of consciousness to be similar, but some consciousnesses have the ability to generate certain consciousnesses. For example, it appears during a woman's menstruation, generating a consciousness that despises her body, or generating a consciousness towards her husband or children, etc. Also, later the lineage completely changes, and if a woman's consciousness arises, then it has the ability to generate a consciousness that despises her body, or generate a consciousness towards her husband or children, etc., because they are of the same kind. Otherwise, it cannot. Also, if many different kinds of consciousness arise from a woman's consciousness, then whichever is the most numerous, the clearest, and the closest to arising, that consciousness alone will arise, because that habit has power. Except for the difference in its assembled body and external conditions. If that habit itself is very strong, why doesn't it always produce results? Because the change of state itself is the characteristic of conditioned phenomena. And that change also agrees with the production of the results of other habits. This is only a rough description of all forms of consciousness, for understanding the subsequent cause, the Buddhas are the masters. It is said: 'Although the peacock's feathers are only one kind, all the forms of causes, cannot be known by the non-omniscient, knowing it is the power of the omniscient.' Since it is said so, what need is there to mention the differences of non-material consciousness? Why doesn't only a consciousness similar to it arise, and why doesn't it arise in a definite order like sprouts, trunks, and leaves, etc.? This question will become a clear refutation for those non-Buddhists who think that consciousness arises from the self (Sanskrit: ātman). If it is said that it depends on the difference of combination with the mind, that is not right, because the relationship is not other. Because related things are completely present, and the definition of combination is, combination preceded by non-combination, thus distinguishing.
