Explanation of the Abhidharma-kosa. Vasubandhu. Explanation of the Abhidharma-kosa. Vasubandhu. As it is said that abandonment is the name of complete knowledge, that is also because, from the seeing of truth and cultivation, it is said that afflictions are abandoned. Afflictions should be abandoned through the path of seeing, and should also be abandoned through the path of cultivation, thus extensively explained. Now, are those paths of seeing and cultivation without outflows or with outflows? If it should be said so, then for this reason, these should be said: The path of cultivation is of two kinds, the so-called path of seeing is without outflows. The path of cultivation is of two kinds: worldly and transcendental. The path of seeing is the enemy of the three realms, and because the nine kinds of afflictions to be abandoned by the path of seeing are abandoned all at once, therefore it is only transcendental, because the worldly does not have such power. It is said from seeing the truth, then where are those truths? The truths are said to be four. Where is it said? Dharma With outflows and without outflows, in showing, with the truth of the path without outflows, the truth of the path is shown by its own name. What is stopped by individual examination? It is separation, thus showing the truth of cessation. Suffering, arising, the world, there the truth of suffering and arising is shown. Is the order of these only like this? Answer: No. Then how is it? Suffering, arising, similarly, cessation and path, if so, the order of those is like this. Similarly, the word is for the purpose of extremely showing that one's own nature is just as it was said before. Then, how do those manifest realization in order? Whichever truth is realized earlier, that is shown earlier. If it is not so, then the cause is shown earlier, and the result is shown later. Some are shown in accordance with birth, for example, mindfulness and meditation, etc. Some are shown in accordance with thorough examination, for example, the right abandonments, because earlier, in order to abandon those that have arisen, desire is generated, and later, for those that have not arisen,

There is no certainty of that arising. The truths are taught in accordance with realization. Why are the truths realized in that way? Because one first fully understands the truth of suffering, which is the basis for attachment, harm, and the pursuit of liberation, during the stage of discernment. Later, one fully understands the truth of the origin, asking, "What is the cause of this?" One fully understands the truth of cessation, asking, "What is the cessation of this?" One fully understands the truth of the path, asking, "What is the path to this?" It is like seeing a disease and seeking its source, its end, and its cure. This example of the truths is also explained in the sutras. Which sutra explains it? It is shown in the one that says, "A doctor with four limbs extracts a poisoned arrow." Just as one fully understands the truths during the stage of discernment because of what was previously abandoned, so too one realizes the truths during the stage of realization, like a well-trained horse running unhindered when the direction is shown. What is the meaning of "realization"? It is to realize completely and correctly. Why is it only without outflows and not with outflows? Because it is the correct realization that is directed towards nirvana; "correct" means "in reality itself." In that case, the aggregates of appropriation that have become the result are the truth of suffering. Those that have become the cause are the truth of the origin, because they arise from this. Therefore, these two are cause and result, and they are different in name but not in substance. Cessation and the path are also different in substance. What is the meaning of the phrase "the noble truths" that appears in the sutras? These are true for the noble ones. Therefore, only in the sutras is it said, "the noble truths." Are these false for others? Because these are not inverted, they are true for all, but the noble ones see these as they are, while others do not. Therefore, these are called the truths of the noble ones, which is not inverted.
