and thirst, cold, heat, fatigue, and the suffering born from attachment to desire, there is not even a slight feeling of happiness until it is tormented by other sufferings. Therefore, the unwise only consider the antidote to be happiness, but not happiness itself. Children even generate the idea of happiness from particular instances of suffering, such as carrying something from shoulder to shoulder. Therefore, it is said that happiness is completely non-existent. The Abhidharma masters say: It does exist. This is the correct reasoning. How is it done? For the time being, to the one who slanders happiness, one should ask this: What is called suffering? If he says: It is the nature of harm, then one should say: How is it? If he says: It is harming, then it is established that benefiting is happiness. If he says: It is unwanted, then it is established that wanting is happiness. If he says: That very wanting is disliked by the noble ones when they are free from attachment, therefore wanting itself is not completely established. Then one says: No, disliking is for another reason. Whatever feeling is desired by its own nature, it will never become unwanted merely because of that. Like this, the noble ones refute what they dislike through other means, and they see it as a place of carelessness, something to be accomplished through great effort, something that changes, and something impermanent, but not in the manner of its own nature. If this were unwanted by its own nature, then no one would ever develop attachment to it. Because in order to be free from attachment, one would also view its faults through other means. Therefore, the feeling of happiness exists by its own nature. What the Blessed One said, 'Whatever is felt is suffering here,' that was said by the Blessed One only to Ananda, 'Whatever is felt is suffering here,' I mean that formations are impermanent.

Therefore, it is determined that this was said with the intention of referring to the changing nature of formations (འདུ་བྱེད།, saṃskāra, saṃskāra, formations). Therefore, it is established that this was not said with the intention of referring to the suffering of suffering If all feelings were inherently suffering, then why would the venerable Ānanda say to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, you have also spoken of these three feelings, namely, pleasant feeling, painful feeling, and neither-pleasant-nor-painful feeling. And Blessed One, you have also said that whatever is felt is suffering here." If so, what did the Blessed One have in mind when he said that whatever is felt is suffering here? If he asked this, he would also ask: "What did the Blessed One have in mind when he spoke of the three feelings?" And the Blessed One would answer: "These three feelings, I spoke of them with intention." If he were to answer in this way, then he would also say that. Therefore, the three feelings exist by their own nature, and this statement, "Whatever is felt is suffering here," I spoke of it with intention. This statement is made to show that it has a hidden meaning. Furthermore, when it is said that pleasant feeling should be regarded as suffering, there are two aspects to that. By its own nature, it is pleasant because it is agreeable, but because it is subject to change and impermanence, it is suffering in terms of its category. In this regard, if one sees it as pleasant, then those with desire will indulge in its taste, and therefore they will be bound. If one sees it as suffering, then one will be free from desire for it, and therefore one will be liberated. Therefore, the Blessed One taught to see it in the way that one would be liberated by seeing it. How then does one understand that this nature is pleasant? It is like this: The perfect Buddha, with the greatest wisdom, knowing the impermanence and changeability of formations (འདུ་བྱེད།, saṃskāra, saṃskāra, formations), therefore said that feeling is suffering. This is what was said. Furthermore, the teaching that says that perceiving suffering as pleasure is a reversed perception is also intentional, because the world is feeling and
