It should be remembered. For the sake of remembering. Alas, to apply that to its meaning, this is well said by those born of merit. How should it be applied? Is it through the gate of arising, or through the gate of commanding? Since going to memory is not possible, it is from the gate of arising. If that is the case, then only the cause is the lord, and only the effect is the servant. Thus, the cause has power over the effect, and the effect is also in accordance with it, so that is the cause of memory, that is it. Whatever is called "black," holding onto the continuum of the aggregates of actions as one, and saying the lord of "cow," that is also, in another place, when change occurs, thinking of the entity of the cause in mind, then it is said "lord," other than that, the single "black" is nothing at all, and there is no "cow" either. Therefore, for that, there is no entity of the lord other than the entity of the cause. Similarly, who knows? Whose knowing is it? Such things should also be said, because its causes are the various faculties, objects, and mental activities, etc., this is the difference. Any action depends on the actor, all actions depend on the actor. For example, in the phrase "Devadatta goes," the place to be gone depends on the goer Devadatta, similarly, knowing is an action. Therefore, if someone says that who knows should also be said, then it should be asked in return, what is this "Devadatta"? If it is said to be "self," then that is what needs to be proven. If it is said to be nominally designated as a person, then the single person is nothing at all, but those aggregates are also called by that name. To that, just as Devadatta goes, so it is known. If asked how Devadatta goes? For the momentary aggregates of actions, which are continuous and not different, children hold onto as one, and then call them "Devadatta," when the continuum of these aggregates arises in another place, then it is said that Devadatta goes. Arising in another place is going, just as going is said of the continuum of fire and sound.
