Among all the descriptions of the earth, the Buddha, the Bhagavan, has completely abandoned his own conduct and the end of karma, and has prescribed conduct and karma for those disciples who claim to seek liberation. The three noble lineages prescribe conduct, and the fourth prescribes karma. The Buddha said, "If you do this karma with this conduct, then before long you will attain liberation." Why prescribe such conduct and such karma? It is to counteract the arising of craving. The sutra speaks of four kinds of craving arising: "Bhikkhus, when craving arises, it arises for the sake of robes, for the sake of alms, for the sake of bedding and seats. When abiding, one abides. When clinging, one clings. Bhikkhus, when craving arises, it arises for the sake of such arising and decay," and so on, as explained in detail in the sutra. To counteract these, the four noble lineages are taught. For the sake of the clinging to self and what belongs to self, and the desire for things, for the sake of the peace of that time and forever, that meaning is taught in various ways. The objects clung to as belonging to self are robes and so on. The object clung to as self is the body. The desire for these is craving. Among these, the three noble lineages pacify the desire for objects clung to as belonging to self at that time. The fourth pacifies both desires forever. How to perfect the practice has already been explained. Since one has become a vessel, how does one enter that practice? One enters it through the contemplation of the impure and the mindfulness of breathing in and out. Mindfulness itself is mindfulness. Some enter through the contemplation of the impure, and some enter through the mindfulness of breathing in and out. In order, these are those who have excessive desire and conceptual thought. These have more desire and conceptual thought. Those who are close to desire and indulge in it greatly enter through the contemplation of the impure. Those who indulge in conceptual thought enter through the mindfulness of breathing in and out. Some say that this does not focus on various things, and therefore it cuts off conceptual thought. But the contemplation of the impure focuses on the distinctions of color and shape, and therefore it leads to conceptual thought.

It is said that this is because of fabrication. Others say that it is because it does not look back. Just as the eye's consciousness, the unattractive aspect is looking back, because it is close to its object. In this regard, desire has four aspects: desire for color, desire for shape, desire for touch, and desire for service. The antidote for the first is to express the unattractive aspect that focuses on separate offerings and so on. The second is to focus on separate eating and separate scattering. The third is to focus on the skeleton that is gnawed by insects and connected to the ribs by tendons. The fourth is to focus on the motionless corpse of the dead. Without distinction, all those with skeletons should do this. Because for the skeleton of bones, these four bases of desire do not exist at all. Because it is faith and temporary attention, the unattractive aspect does not eliminate afflictions, but it can suppress them. The yogic practice of meditating on the unattractive is expressed in three ways: the beginner, the one who has completely purified, and the one who has perfected attention. Among them, from bones to the ocean, expanding and contracting is the practice of the beginner. The yogic practitioner who wants to meditate on the unattractive should first focus his mind on the limbs of his own body, such as the toes or the forehead, or wherever he likes. By believing that the flesh there is rotting and flowing away, he gradually practices separating the bones until everything is seen as a skeleton. Similarly, in order to generate faith, starting from faith in the second, gradually believe that the entire place up to the edge of the ocean, including temples, monasteries, towns, and fields, is filled with skeletons. When contracting again, in order to contract the mind, contract until you believe that only you are a skeleton. It is said that this alone can perfect the unattractive aspect, and this is the yoga practice of the beginner. From the foot bones to half the skull, letting go is said to be purified. In order to
