Thereafter, that which is held by worldly people is the ultimate truth. That which is held by others is the conventional truth, so it is said. The truths have all been explained. How can they be seen? It will be explained, therefore, it will be explained starting from the beginning of the entry. One who is virtuous, who hears and contemplates, should diligently apply themselves to meditation. One who wishes to see the truths should first and foremost maintain moral discipline. After that, one should uphold the hearing that is in accordance with seeing the truths, or listen to its meaning. After hearing, one should contemplate without perversion. After contemplating, one should diligently apply themselves to meditating on samadhi. Thus, relying on the wisdom arising from hearing, the wisdom arising from contemplation is born. Relying on the wisdom arising from contemplation, the wisdom arising from meditation is born. What is the nature of these wisdoms? The minds arising from hearing, etc., have only name, both, and meaning as their objects. The Vaibhashikas say that the wisdom arising from hearing focuses on names, while the wisdom arising from contemplation focuses on both names and meanings, and sometimes letters lead to meaning. The wisdom arising from meditation focuses only on meaning, it enters into meaning without relying on letters. For example, a person who is not good at swimming only holds on to something in the water and does not let go. Someone who is slightly skilled sometimes lets go and sometimes holds on. Someone who is completely skilled can swim across without relying on holding on to anything, this is just an example, so it is said. Others say that for this conceptualization, whatever focuses on names becomes the wisdom arising from hearing, and whatever focuses on meaning becomes the wisdom arising from meditation, so the wisdom arising from contemplation cannot be established. The wisdom arising from hearing is the certainty that arises from a reliable scriptural authority. The wisdom arising from contemplation arises from reasoned investigation. The wisdom arising from meditation arises from samadhi, so it is said that this seems to be the unsurpassed of these characteristics. Thus, diligently striving in meditation, how can meditation be perfected?

Furthermore, it is said that there are two kinds of restraints. If one restrains oneself with body and mind in order to cut off the distractions and unwholesome thoughts, then it will be perfected. So, which of these two restraints is easier? Having few desires and being content is easier, while being discontent and having great desires is not. What is discontent? What is great desire? Even when one has obtained something, one is still greedy and discontent. When one has not obtained something, one is greedy and has great desire. The Sutra masters say that repeatedly desiring to obtain abundant Dharma robes and other things is discontent. Desiring to obtain what one has not obtained is great desire. It is said that this is the case. However, is it only for what one has not obtained that one repeatedly desires, and not for what one has already obtained? What is the difference between these two, and it needs to be explained. It can be considered in this way: being unhappy with obtaining things that are not abundant and not many is discontent. Desiring to obtain things that are abundant and many is great desire. The antidote to the opposite of discontent and great desire should be known as contentment and having few desires. These two do not belong to the three realms and are without defilement. Connected with the word "antidote," it also refers to those who do not belong to the three realms. Discontent and great desire are only acting in desire. What is the nature of having few desires and being content? It is said to be without attachment, and these are the natures of being without attachment. Connected with the word "noble lineage without attachment," the noble ones are born from these, so there are four noble lineages, and these are also the nature of being without attachment. Three of them are the nature of contentment. The first three, being content with Dharma robes, alms, bedding, and cushions, these are the natures of contentment. The fourth noble lineage is the joy of abandoning and meditating. How is it the nature of being without attachment? Because it turns its back on attachment to existence and desire. What did the Blessed One show with the four noble lineages? With three
