He asked about the single substance of life for beings. If there is nothing at all, how can one prophesy whether this is other or non-other? It is like asking whether the hairs of a tortoise are rough or smooth. This knot has already been untied by those before. That king came to the place of offering, facing the elder Nāgasena, and said, 'Monks and ascetics are too talkative. If I answer what is asked, I shall ask a question.' When told to ask, he asked, 'Is life the same as the body? Or is life other and the body other?' The elder said, 'This is unanswerable.' He said, 'Did I not vow earlier not to prophesy other monks? Why do you now say this is unanswerable and speak of something else?' The elder said, 'Great king, kings are too talkative. If I answer what is asked, I too shall ask a question.' When told to ask, he asked, 'The mango tree in your courtyard that bears fruit, are its fruits sour or sweet?' I said, 'There is no mango tree at all in my courtyard.' I said, 'Did I not vow earlier not to prophesy other great kings? Why do you now say there is no mango tree and speak of something else?' He said, 'How can one prophesy whether the fruits of a tree that does not exist are sour or sweet? Great king, similarly, if life itself does not exist, why should one prophesy whether it is other than the body or not other?' and so on. Why did the Blessed One not simply say 'It does not exist at all'? Because it depends on the questioner's intention. If he understands that what is called life, which is the continuum of aggregates, also does not exist, he will fall into wrong view, because he does not understand dependent origination. Therefore, it is also intolerable to teach that. This is what the Blessed One said to Ānanda, if the questions asked by the wandering ascetic's dwelling place and relatives are said to exist, then...

Is it not inappropriate to say that all phenomena are without self? Ananda, if one answers that there is no self to the question asked by those who wander everywhere and share the same abode and lineage, wouldn't the ignorance of those who wander everywhere and share the same abode and lineage, who have always been ignorant and thought that there was a self before, increase and expand even more, thinking that even that self of mine no longer exists? Ananda, to say that there is a self leads to the extreme of permanence. Ananda, to say that there is no self leads to the extreme of annihilation. From what you have extensively taught, remember this as well. Here it is said: Like speaking with the fangs of views, Considering the destruction of actions, Like a tigress carrying her cub, The Victorious One teaches the Dharma. If one accepts that there is a self, One speaks with the fangs of views. If one does not become a conventional distinction, Virtue becomes a factor that harms the cub. Again it is said: Because there is not, the Bhagavan did not say that life, Is something else. Because investigation would also become nothing, Therefore, he did not say that there is not. For whom is the cause of the aggregates good? The fruit of non-virtue exists. That is called life, That, Because the name of life is shown, it becomes nothing. Life is called the aggregates, He did not say that it is merely imputed, At that time, such beings, Do not have the fortune to realize emptiness. Abiding in this way, is there a self? Asking the question of asking about non-existence, He did not speak considering the intention, If there is, why does he not say there is? Questions such as the world is permanent, etc., were also not answered considering the intention of the questioner. For the time being, if one thinks that the world has a self, because that does not exist, it is unreasonable not to answer in all four ways. If one thinks that the world is all samsara, that is also unreasonable. If the world is permanent, then no one will ever be completely liberated from suffering. If it is impermanent, then everything will be annihilated. If it is both, then some will definitely be liberated from suffering, and some will not. If it is neither, then it will be neither liberated from suffering nor not liberated from suffering. Therefore, liberation from suffering depends on the path
