The change of the earth realm is uncertain, because for beings who are completely decayed, growing upwards, and completely extinguished, the earth realm does not exist. Wanting the eye consciousness to appear visible, the divine eye is the meditation that makes knowledge appear visible. Wisdom arising from union becomes clear, the qualities arising from union, all three realms and all uncontaminated qualities, are the meditation that makes wisdom completely clear. The ultimate diamond-like samadhi, whichever it is, is the meditation that makes defilements cease. The Dharma taught by the Blessed One is directed towards oneself, therefore it is said that only the four dhyanas were taught. The chapter on samadhis has been explained. Now is the chapter on explaining the qualities that depend on samadhi, so it should be explained, the immeasurables are four: loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity, because they are focused on limitless beings. Why are there only four? Because they are the antidotes to afflictions such as hatred. In order to abandon these through hatred, harm, displeasure, and desire, and many hatreds, therefore there are four, the number is like that. What is the difference between the unattractive and equanimity as antidotes to desire? The Vaibhashikas say that the antidote to the desire for color is the unattractive, and the antidote to the desire for sexual intercourse is equanimity. Some say that the antidote to the desire for sexual intercourse is the unattractive, and the antidote to the desire for parents, children, and relatives is equanimity, this is acceptable. Among them, non-anger is loving-kindness, loving-kindness is the nature of non-anger. Compassion also, compassion is also the same as it. Mental joy is joy, joy is the nature of mental joy. Equanimity is non-attachment, equanimity is the nature of non-attachment. How does it become an antidote to hatred? Because it arises from attachment. This is

Even if it is the nature of both, it is fine. The aspects of love and so on are: Alas, may there be happiness, away from suffering, may all beings be equal. Alas, thinking in the mind, may all beings have happiness, and abide in love. Alas, thinking in the mind that beings are truly suffering, and abide in compassion. Alas, thinking in the mind, may all beings have mental happiness, and abide in joy. Thinking in the mind that beings are equal, and thus thinking in the mind and abiding in equanimity, because of abiding in the middle. For those who do not possess these, because of desiring happiness, how can it not become inverted? Because of thinking in the mind, may it become like that. Or because it is not an inverted thought, because it is a perception of desire. Or even if it is inverted in that way, what fault is there? If it is said to be merely unwholesome, that is not the case, because it is the antidote to harming thoughts and so on, therefore it is the root of goodness. The aspects of these have already been explained. The objects of practice are beings with desire. The objects of these are beings who practice in desire, because they are the antidote to harming thoughts and so on that arise from them. What is said as "practicing in one direction" refers to showing that it abides in the vessel of vessels. In how many grounds are those? Joy is in the two dhyanas. Joy is in the first and second dhyanas, because it is mental happiness. The others are in six grounds. The other three immeasurables are in the six grounds without exception, as well as in special dhyanas and dhyanas. Some say five grounds. Some think that these, except for the unimpeded, are in five grounds. Others say that adding the desire realm and the near-attainment, they are in ten grounds. Because it speaks of samadhi and non-samadhi, as well as the main practice and the preliminary practice. Harming thoughts and so on are the reason for the antidote. What is said? Can the immeasurables also eliminate afflictions? No, it cannot eliminate them. Because it is the ground of the main practice of dhyana, and because it is practice and because it is doing, and the mind
