The happiness of the earth and, in the fourth dhyana of equanimity, there is only equanimity. If the third dhyana and so on do not have the three aggregates of consciousness, and do not have investigation and analysis, then how can they change from seeing to touching? How can they initiate all discriminations? Those born in them are not without eye consciousness and so on, nor are they self-made. So what is it like? The second dhyana and so on have body-eye and, ear consciousness discrimination arises. Which belongs to the first dhyana. The second dhyana and so on are like emanated minds, because they can see, so they can initiate all discriminations, even the eye, ear, and body consciousness and discrimination arising of the first dhyana ground manifest. That is unindicated, not afflicted. Manifesting those is the consciousness of the first dhyana ground, which is unobscured and unindicated, because it is free from desire, it is not afflicted, and because it is inferior, it is not virtuous either. The work of dhyana is complete. Also, how are the pure dhyanas and formless dhyanas of the pure ground and so on obtained? Free from desire, purity is obtained from birth. Being without that is dhyana or formless, from the lower ground free from desire, or except for the peak of existence, obtained from lower birth, that is not obtained from birth. Why is it said to be without that? Those with purity, from practice also certainly obtain purity corresponding to the decisive part, and from degeneration also obtain corresponding to the degenerating part. Therefore, the purity of dhyana is obtained by being free from desire, and abandoned by being free from desire, and similarly, is there obtaining and abandoning from degeneration and birth? Answer: Yes. Corresponding to the degenerating part of the first dhyana. That is obtained by being free from desire from the desire realm, and abandoned by being free from desire from the Brahma realm. Free from desire from the Brahma realm

It is obtained from abandoning decline, and abandoned from abandoning decline from attachment to desire. It is obtained from where one is born into the Brahma world, therefore it is abandoned when one is born into the desire realm, so it is said. The undefiled one who is free from desire obtains from one who does not possess it. It should be combined in this way. One who is in accordance with it also obtains non-liberation from knowing the end, and also obtains learners and non-learners from the transformation of faculties. If you ask: From definitely entering, isn't it that one obtains the undefiled from the very beginning? Because it cannot be obtained gradually, it is undoubtedly so, it is explained as how one obtains without doubt. The afflicted one declines and arises, and obtains from one who does not possess it. It should only be combined in this way. If one completely declines from being free from desire from it, then one obtains from completely declining. If one is born from a higher ground to a lower ground, then one obtains from being born. What is the subsequent arising of the object of meditative absorption? The subsequent arising of the undefiled first dhyana is six, namely one's own ground and the pure ones of the ground of the second and third dhyanas and other undefiled ones. The subsequent arising of the sphere of nothingness is seven, namely one's own ground and the pure ones of the ground of the sphere of consciousness and the sphere of infinite space and the undefiled ones, and only the pure one of the peak of existence, because there is no undefiled one. The subsequent arising of the second dhyana is eight, namely one's own ground and the third and fourth dhyanas, and the pure ones and the undefiled ones of the ground of the first dhyana. The subsequent arising of the sphere of infinite consciousness is nine, namely one's own two grounds, and the four grounds of the sphere of infinite space and the fourth dhyana, and the three grounds of the sphere of nothingness and the peak of existence. Similarly, the subsequent arising of other dhyanas and formless absorptions should also combine ten things. This is a brief summary, in the subsequent arising of the undefiled, between the three above and below, virtue arises. Saying virtue refers to the pure ones and the undefiled ones, because it is virtue. In the subsequent arising of the object of undefiled meditative absorption, one's own ground and the higher ground, and the pure ones and the undefiled ones between the three lower grounds arise.
