Its nature is eleven branches. Therefore, great joy is faith. That is, in order to attain the second dhyana, faith necessarily arises from the ground of samadhi. This is called inner great joy here. Others say that investigation, analysis, and samadhi are not other natures, and inner great joy is also not another nature. If there is no other nature, how can it be established as a mental factor? They say that the differences in the states of sentient beings are also mental factors. This is the final conclusion of the treatise. How is it understood that joy is mental ease? What else is there? It is like what other schools claim. How do other schools claim it? Joy is only other mental factors, and mental ease is considered the happiness of all three dhyanas. The happiness that exists in dhyanas cannot be mental ease, because there are two bodies, so there are joy and mental ease. The Blessed One, in the Sutra of Transformation, proclaimed the third dhyana, and said that here, the root of mental ease arises and ceases completely. And for the fourth dhyana, it was proclaimed that the root of happiness ceases. It is also said, "Having abandoned happiness, and having previously abandoned suffering, mental ease and unease also disappear." Therefore, there is no root of mental ease in the third dhyana. Thus, only joy is mental ease, not happiness. So, in the dhyanas with afflictions, do they also have those branches as described? No. What is missing in those dhyanas? Those with afflictions do not have joy and happiness, do not have mindfulness and awareness, do not have equanimity and pure mindfulness. For the first dhyana, there is no joy and happiness born of happiness, because it is not separated from afflictions. For the second dhyana, there is no inner great joy, because it is defiled by afflictions. For the third dhyana, there is no mindfulness and awareness, because it is completely obscured by the happiness of afflictions. For the fourth dhyana, there is no equanimity and completely pure mindfulness, because it is defiled by afflictions.

So it is. Some say so for the time being. Some say extremely practiced and abandoned equally. Some say that in the first and second (dhyanas) which have afflictions, there is no extreme practice, but in the third and fourth (dhyanas) there is no abandonment of equality. Because those two are the place of virtue, there are many reasons. The Blessed One said that the third dhyana is with agitation because it has defects. Because of being freed from the eight defects, the fourth is without agitation. What are those defects? Coarse and subtle and breath, etc., and four such as happiness. Coarse and, subtle and, happiness and, suffering and, mental pleasure and, displeasure and, inhalation and exhalation, in the fourth dhyana there is not one of those eight defects, therefore it is said to be unwavering. Others say that the fourth is unwavering because it will not be agitated by coarse and, subtle and, joy and, happiness, etc., because the sutra uses the example of a windless lamp. In the second dhyana, because joy is mentioned, it is said that there is mental pleasure. In the third dhyana it is happiness, in the fourth it is said that there is equanimity, what is that? What are the feelings that exist in the dhyanas of absorption, do those themselves exist in the dhyanas of arising? The answer is no. So how is it? In the dhyanas of arising, there is mental pleasure and equanimity, equanimity mental pleasure happiness and, equanimity equanimity feeling exists. In the first dhyana of arising there are three feelings, namely, the happiness of the third collection of consciousness and, the mental pleasure of the mind and, the equanimity of the fourth collection of consciousness. In the second dhyana of arising there are two feelings, namely, the mental pleasure of the mind and equanimity. The collection of consciousness
