It is said that there are cases where something does not necessarily arise from existence, because it itself does not necessarily arise from it, and because it does not necessarily arise from everything and forever. The Blessed One also said that in meditative states, it is acceptable if there is a form of form, or even up to a form of consciousness. For the formless, it is said that it is acceptable if there is a form of feeling, or even up to a form of consciousness. If there is a form of form among them, why would it not be said that it is acceptable to have a form of form? Therefore, the formless are formless. Then, how can those who die and transmigrate from there, whose form has been severed for not a few eons, be born again? Form arises from mind. Form arises from obtaining the entry of the mind that is completely imbued with its ripening cause. Then, how does the mind abide relying on form? Why would it not abide? Because such a thing has not been seen here. Without morsel food, one will not abide in the realm of form. Why? Because such a thing has not been seen here. How it abides has already been said before. This is the end. This should be said, is it because the sphere of infinite space and so on, only focuses on space and so on, that it is said in this way? No. Then, what is it like? For the time being, there are three. Infinite consciousness, infinite space. Nothing at all, thus it is said. For the sake of union, according to their number, infinite space. Infinite consciousness. Nothing at all, thus contemplating, and completely uniting with them, therefore their names are those. Because of inferiority, there is no perception. It is also not without perception. Because perception is small, it is said to be neither with nor without perception. That is because perception is not clear, and it is not merely without perception. If it is also like this for it, perception is a disease. Perception is a tumor. Perception is a dart. Non-perception is complete delusion. Thus, without perception. The sphere of neither with nor without perception is peaceful. This

is extremely abundant, although there is such a combination, but why do they think so? Because the cognitions are all small. This sentence must undoubtedly be said, so it is said. Thus, the basis of meditative absorption, there are eight kinds. Thus, these are the eight kinds of basis for meditative absorption, namely the four dhyanas and the four formless realms. Among them, seven have three kinds, the seven other than the peak of existence have three kinds, namely taste-accompanied, pure, and non-leaking. The eighth has two kinds, the peak of existence is taste-accompanied and pure, but there is no non-leaking. Among them, taste-accompanied is desire. Worldly virtue is pure. Worldly virtue, the basis of meditative absorption, is called pure, because it possesses white dharmas such as non-attachment. What does taste-accompanied experience? It experiences that. Whichever basis of meditative absorption has just passed, it experiences that, because it arises from the thing that is experienced. And what it experiences is what is entered into. Non-leaking is transcendental. Whichever transcendental basis of meditative absorption, that is non-leaking. Among these bases of meditative absorption, only dhyanas have limbs, while the formless realms do not. Among them, the first dhyana has five limbs. The first dhyana has five limbs, namely investigation, analysis, joy, happiness, and one-pointedness of mind. Thus, these are the five limbs. Meditative absorption is both a limb and a dhyana. It is said that the rest are limbs. Just like a four-limbed army, the five-limbed dhyana is also like that. The second dhyana has four limbs. Superior understanding and faith are joy, etc. The second dhyana has four limbs, namely inner superior understanding, joy, happiness, and one-pointedness of mind.

English

That is just so. The third dhyana has five branches: equanimity, mindfulness, wisdom, joy, and abiding. The third dhyana also has five branches: equanimity, mindfulness, correct knowledge, truth, and samadhi. Abiding is a synonym for samadhi, as it says in the sutra: "What is correct samadhi? It is when the mind abides and abides correctly." Finally, there are four: mindfulness, equanimity, and neither pleasure nor pain, samadhi, etc. The last is the fourth dhyana, which has four branches: neither pleasure nor pain, completely pure equanimity, completely pure mindfulness, and completely pure samadhi. These are the eighteen branches of dhyana, because the first and third dhyanas each have five branches, and the second and fourth dhyanas each have four branches. That is how it is in terms of names, but in reality there are eleven. In reality, there are eleven of them, that is, the first dhyana has five. The second dhyana has the addition of inner purity. The third dhyana has equanimity, mindfulness, correct knowledge, and joy. The fourth dhyana has the feeling of neither pleasure nor pain. Therefore, it is said: "Do the branches that exist in the first dhyana also exist in the second dhyana?" There are four possibilities: the first possibility is vitarka and vicara. The second possibility is inner purity. The third possibility is joy, happiness, and one-pointedness of mind. The fourth possibility is the dharmas other than what has been said. Similarly, all the branches of dhyana should be combined with each other. Why is the joy that exists in the third dhyana said to be a different entity? Because the joy there is feeling, while in the first dhyana, it is the joy of ease. In the first dhyana, ease is called joy. Here it is the joy of ease, and there it is the joy of feeling, how is this known? Because the second dhyana of absorption does not possess the sense of joy, and in those two dhyanas, it cannot be of the body, because the one who is absorbed does not have the five aggregates of consciousness. Nor is it a mental factor, because there is joy.
