Yes. Now, let's discuss the meditation of equipoise. Therefore, it is said: The virtue of equipoise is one-pointedness. Without distinction, the one-pointedness of a virtuous mind is meditation, because it is the nature of samadhi. If it has attendants, it is the five aggregates. If it has retinue, it should be understood as the nature of the five aggregates. What is meant by "one-pointedness"? It is the singleness of the object. If that is the case, then is it only the mind with a single object that is samadhi, and other mind-born dharmas are not? It is not that only the mind is samadhi, but the dharma that makes them one-pointed is samadhi, and that itself is one-pointedness. Since it is momentary, is not every mind one-pointed? If it is said that it does not stray from the second, then for those who have the same, samadhi is meaningless. Why not consider that it is only from samadhi that the object of the mind is single? Because samadhi is many grounds, all minds will also become one-pointed. No, because the power of samadhi is small. Others say that only the one-pointed mind is samadhi, as it is said in the sutra: The higher mind training and the chief of complete purification of the mind are the four meditations. What is the meaning of meditation? Because it contemplates, it is meditation. If the mind abides equally, it knows reality as it is, therefore it is knowing reality, which is a synonym for the word. The root of this word means contemplation, and contemplation is also wisdom, which arises from the tenets. If that is the case, then will all samadhi become meditation? No, because that name is given to those who possess excellence, like the sun. What is it that possesses excellence? It is the samadhi that possesses limbs, which arises naturally from the union of tranquility and insight, therefore the sutra says "dwelling happily in the present dharma" and "the path is easy," so this is very worthy of contemplation. How do afflictions

If it is said to be meditation, it is because it is wrongly identified in the mind. If it is said to be too extreme, it is not. Because only that which is similar to it is given this name, like a rotten seed. The Blessed One also spoke of unwholesome meditations. So, what is the first dhyana, which is wholesome and single-pointed? What are the ones up to the fourth dhyana like? For the time being, the first is: endowed with investigation, joy, and bliss. The first dhyana, which is wholesome and single-pointed, is one that is endowed with investigation, joy, and bliss. By mentioning investigation, reflection is also explained, because they operate together, like smoke and fire. Without reflection, there is no investigation that is associated with joy and bliss. The remaining three dhyanas are: abandoning five branches each. Combining it with "wholesome and single-pointed," the second dhyana is abandoning investigation and having joy and bliss. The third is abandoning investigation and joy and having bliss. The fourth is abandoning investigation, joy, and bliss. These dhyanas are formless just as they are, in what way? They are also two or four kinds by way of arising and entering into equipoise. Their arising has already been explained. The formless ones in equipoise, without distinction, are the nature of a wholesome mind that is single-pointed, and that has already been explained in that way. If with retinue, because the formless realm is followed by the four aggregates. Born from the isolation of the lower ground. What is born from isolation from the fourth dhyana is the sphere of infinite space. What is born from isolation from that is the sphere of infinite consciousness. What is born from isolation from that is the sphere of nothingness. What is born from isolation from that is the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, thus there are four formless realms. What is this "isolation"? By what path is it distinguished from the lower ground? It is because it has become free from desire. Those formless realms also: together with the three access states, it is said to destroy the perception of form. The access state of the sphere of infinite space is the fourth dhyana.
