Among those. The paths of the mundane and the supramundane, the paths of seeing, meditation, and no-more-learning, as well as the path of joining, the path of no interruption, the path of liberation, and the path of distinction, these are called many distinctions of the path. If these are briefly summarized, how many kinds of paths are there? In short, there are four kinds of paths: the path of distinction and the path of liberation, the path of no interruption and the path of joining. The path of joining is the path that gives rise to the path of no interruption immediately following it. The path of no interruption is the path that thoroughly abandons obscurations. The path of liberation is the path that is the first to arise, by which one is necessarily liberated from the obscurations to be abandoned. The path of distinction is any path that is different from these. Why is it called a path? Because one goes from there to there? Or because one seeks nirvana by this, this is the path to nirvana. How are the path of liberation and the path of distinction themselves paths? Because they are similar to this and are the most excellent, or because they cause one to go from higher to higher, or because they enter without remainder into the remainder of the aggregates. Again, the path itself accomplishes nirvana, therefore it is called accomplishment. There are four paths: there is also a path of slow and difficult direct knowledge. There is also a path of quick and difficult direct knowledge. Similarly, there are two kinds of easy paths. Among them, the paths of the dhyanas are easy. The path of the four dhyanas is easy, because it is completely grasped by the limbs, and because of the equality of shamatha and vipashyana, it arises naturally without effort. The paths of other grounds are difficult. The paths of non-discrimination, special dhyana, and the formless ones are difficult because they are not completely grasped by the limbs, and because shamatha and vipashyana are weak. In non-discrimination and special dhyana, shamatha is weak. In the formless ones, vipashyana is weak. There are also two kinds of paths: the dull-witted have slow direct knowledge. The other has quick direct knowledge. The dull-witted, whether the path is easy or difficult, have slow direct knowledge. The sharp-witted have quick direct knowledge. The path itself has direct
