If asked in this way, suppose an Arhat has generated an antidote that makes it so that afflictions will never arise, then in any case, it will completely degenerate. However, if it has not arisen, and the nature of the seed of affliction has not been completely eradicated, then how can one say that defilements are exhausted? If defilements are not exhausted, how can one be an Arhat? This is how it is from the perspective of reasoning. Then, how should one answer the question from the sutra that says, "A noble disciple who possesses the qualities of a Hearer, who conducts himself in such a way, who abides in such a way, occasionally, one or two out of a hundred, due to loss of mindfulness, will generate sinful, unwholesome thoughts," like the sutra of the charcoal pile? That is because the sutra shows that only Arhats are like that, from "having long been devoted to a solitary mind" to "having entered into Nirvana" is explained. Furthermore, it is also said in the sutra that this is the power of the Arhat, and it is said that from all the dharmas that are like places of defilement, it has become cool and has become cool. Although there are such statements, as long as the conduct is not fully understood, it is possible for afflictions to arise in the learner who conducts himself in such a way, so it is in terms of the stage of the learner, and there is no fault in saying it that way. The Vaibhashikas assert that even Arhats can degenerate. Do only those Arhats possess the six lineages? Or do others also possess the six lineages? Learners and non-Aryas possess the six lineages. Learners and ordinary beings likewise possess the six lineages, and the lineages of Arhats are the precursors to those. Furthermore, there is no regression on the path of seeing. There is a regression of faculties other than the path of seeing, because combination is impossible, so it is not on the path of seeing. Some regress their faculties in the stage of ordinary beings, and some in the stage of faith-inclination. The sutra says this: "I say that it is impossible for this person to degenerate from any of the four superior mental states arising from the attainment of dwelling happily in the present dharma."

Thus, the liberation of the mind, in the state of immovability, which is directly realized by the body, from that, no aspect of this can be diminished. How can those who abide in the Dharma of immovability, who abide happily in the visible Dharma, be diminished? From attainment and non-attainment, and from close practice, one should understand that there are three types of diminution. If one diminishes from having attained qualities, then it is diminishing from attainment. If one does not attain the qualities that should be attained, then it is diminishing from non-attainment. If one does not directly realize the qualities that have been attained, then it is diminishing from close practice. Among these diminutions, the final teacher is immovable, while the intermediate one has three aspects for others. Buddhas only have diminution from close practice, and nothing else. For the Dharma of immovability, there is also diminution from non-attainment, because the Dharma of distinguished individuals has not been attained. For other Arhats, there is also diminution from attainment. Therefore, the Dharma of immovability does not contradict the Sutra because of diminution from close practice. Those who say that there is no diminution say that the liberation of all, the unpolluted, is immovable. How is it established in the Dharma of immovability? It has already been explained in that way, so this should not be disputed. Furthermore, if someone diminishes from the fruit of Arhatship, will they be reborn? There is no such thing, as it is said: 'There is no death from diminishing from the fruit.' There is no death for anyone who diminishes from the fruit. The Sutra says: 'Monks, for noble disciples who are learned, there may be a slight decrease in mindfulness, but it will quickly disappear, be completely exhausted, and completely reach its end.' If it were not so, then the pure conduct would not be credible. Whoever diminishes from a certain fruit, while abiding in that fruit, whatever is not to be done, they do not do. Even though they diminish, they do not do anything that contradicts that fruit, just as a great warrior, even when frightened, does not lose his posture of striking. Furthermore, the unimpeded transformation of the faculties and the liberation of
