What is it? If asked, what are the afflictions that are not like that? There is a difference. The view of self, like selflessness, clings to things like form as the agent, the experiencer, and the controller, falsely establishing what is not the true self. And clinging to extremes and so on also relies on that basis, so they are called without a basis. The desire, anger, pride, and ignorance that are abandoned through cultivation are merely attachment to things like form, universal torment, arrogance, and indistinct nature, so they are called with a basis. Because what they rely on is only suffering and so on, but I and so on, even I do not exist. Others say this: Like this, for the things that are abandoned through cultivation, there is a separate certainty of the characteristics of the desirable and the undesirable. But for the things that are abandoned through seeing, there are no characteristics of self and so on. Therefore, they are called things without a separate certain basis. Furthermore, when the noble one does not pay attention, afflictions arise due to loss of mindfulness, but not necessarily when paying attention, just like the illusion of a snake on a rope. When not paying attention, it is impossible for the view of self and so on to arise, because it is the cause of universal attention. Therefore, having abandoned what is abandoned by seeing, there is no complete falling away from the first ground. The Sutra masters say that there is not even falling away from the state of an Arhat, which is reasonable. How is this understood? Through scriptural authority and reasoning. How is the scriptural authority? As it is said in the sutra: Monks, whatever is abandoned by noble wisdom is truly abandoned. For the learner, one should maintain mindfulness, and so it is said, but not for the Arhat. Ananda, I say that even for the Arhat, gain and respect can cause obstacles. In this sutra, it is only said that there will be falling away from dwelling happily in the Dharma that is seen, but it is not said that from the unmoving liberation of mind that is manifested by the body, in any way

He said, "I do not say that there will be degeneration." If it is said that it exists in accordance with time and combination, we also say so. Is this the Arhat himself? Or are they meditators? It should be examined. Because the Samadhi of the actual meditation manifests at the time, liberation is also called "time and combination," and in order to abide in the happiness of the Dharma in sight, it should be sought again and again, therefore it is also called "desirable." Others say that because it should be tasted, it is called "ro." The liberation of the Arhat himself should not be a combination of time and circumstances, because it is always continuous, and it is not desirable because it is not something to be pursued. If one degenerates from the Arhat himself and becomes a certain existence, why did the Bhagavan say that only those who arise from the superior mind that abides happily in the Dharma in sight will degenerate? Therefore, it should be understood that the liberation of all Arhats is immovable. Among those who abide happily in the Dharma in sight, some will degenerate because of the fault of being disturbed by gain and respect, and their power will decline. This refers to those with dull faculties. Some will not degenerate, and this refers to those with sharp faculties. Among them, those who will degenerate are those who have the nature of degeneration; those who will not degenerate are those who have the nature of non-degeneration. Similarly, it should also be applied to those who contemplate the nature of death, and so on. What is the difference between the nature of non-degeneration, non-movement from the abode, and the nature of non-movement? The nature of non-degeneration is not caused by cultivation, and the nature of non-movement is caused by cultivation, because these two do not degenerate from that which only produces the difference of Samadhi. Non-movement from the abode only means that one does not degenerate from the merit in which one abides, but one does not generate other merits, or even if one generates them, one will move from that (merit).
