Another category is the non-returners who approach the formless realm, that is, those beings who have detached from the desire for the form realm and, having died from this place, are born into the formless realm. Moreover, according to the distinctions such as completely liberating from suffering after birth, they are divided into four types, these are the six types of non-returners. Another type is to be liberated from suffering in this place. Another type is to be completely liberated from suffering only in this life, that is, to be liberated from suffering in the visible Dharma, this is the seventh type. Three are divided into three, those approaching the form realm are said to be nine. Dividing the three non-returners into three again, therefore there are nine non-returners who approach the form realm. What are these three? Namely, the intermediate state, those who are completely liberated from suffering after birth, and those who transfer upwards. How are they divided into three? For the time being, those who are completely liberated from suffering in the intermediate state have three situations, namely, quickly, not quickly, and after a long time to be liberated from suffering. Those who are completely liberated from suffering after birth are completely liberated from suffering after birth, with effort, and without effort. All of these are completely liberated from suffering after birth, so they are those who are completely liberated from suffering after birth. Those who transfer upwards are divided according to the differences such as jumping. Or rather, all three of these are because they are liberated from suffering quickly, not quickly, and after a long time. The differences between these come from the differences in karma, power, and afflictions. The differences between these three and nine non-returners come from the differences in karma, afflictions, and power. For the time being, these three are in order, because they have accumulated karma that can manifest, be born, and be experienced in other times, and because the afflictions are generally used less, medium, and large, and the power is large, medium, and small. For this reason, the respective differences should also be appropriately distinguished according to the differences in afflictions and power of the first two triads as above. The last triad should also be viewed from the difference in karma experienced in other times.

These are the nine aspects of afflictions and faculties, so there are nine types of non-returners. Then, how is it that the sutras speak of seven types of noble beings? Before distinguishing the upward transmigrations, they are considered the seven types of noble beings. The dharma of going upward is going upward. The sutras speak without distinguishing them, so the sutras say there are seven types of noble beings. Why are these alone the conduct of noble beings, and not other conducts of learners? Because those who possess these conducts only engage in superior virtuous actions and do not engage in non-superior non-virtuous actions. Moreover, those who have attained these conducts do not return, as previously stated, these are not possessed by others. Therefore, they do not engage in superior or non-superior actions, and because they have attained non-returning, they are the conduct of noble beings, not others. Then, who is a noble being only in the sutras? The sutras extensively speak of those who possess the right view of a learner. Why? Because others have also obtained the vows to never commit the five heinous crimes, and have abandoned most of the afflictions and non-virtuous actions, so they can be considered nominal noble beings. But here, it refers to the case of those who truly possess them without being nominal. Why is there also this distinction among non-returners who have reached the end of their lifespan? There isn't. For example, a noble one who has reached the end of their lifespan in the desire realm does not go to another realm. Because a noble one who has reached the end of their lifespan in the desire realm attains the fruit of non-returning in this life and completely transcends suffering. If one who has reached the end of their lifespan in the form realm exists, they also enter the formless realms, going upward to the ultimate peak of existence. Then, what about what Brahma said, "If I die, may I be born in the heaven of Akanistha"? The Vaibhashikas say that this is because they do not understand the Abhidharma, and the Blessed One did not forbid it in order to please them. Those born in that realm and higher, all have decaying faculties.
