It also applies to after death, after birth, and to conditioned and unconditioned phenomena. The non-returner itself has five types: completely passing into nirvana in the intermediate state refers to completely passing into nirvana in the intermediate state of existence. Completely passing into nirvana after birth refers to merely being born, without dying, completely passing into nirvana with the remainder of aggregates, because of diligence and the natural arising of the path. Some others say that it is also because there is no remainder of aggregates. It is not, because there is no autonomy to abandon life. Completely passing into nirvana with exertion refers to being born without abandoning effort, completely passing into nirvana with exertion, because it is not diligence and the natural arising of the path. Completely passing into nirvana without exertion refers to completely passing into nirvana without exertion, because it is not non-diligence and the natural arising of the path, it is said. Others say that it is because of completely passing into nirvana through the path that focuses on conditioned and unconditioned phenomena. That is not permissible, because it would be too extreme. The sutra says that completely passing into nirvana without exertion occurs first, so only that is permissible, because the path arising naturally and non-naturally are accomplished through effortlessness and effort, through non-exertion and exertion. Completely passing into nirvana after birth is the path that arises most naturally, is most excellent, and is extremely subtle. Moving upwards refers to not completely passing into nirvana in the place where one is born, but going upwards, moving and going refer to the same meaning. That is going to Akanistha by cultivating meditation. Moving upwards has two types from the perspective of cause and effect, from the perspective of cause it is cultivating meditation and not cultivating meditation. From the perspective of effect it is reaching Akanistha and the peak of existence. Among them, by what does one cultivate meditation

He (referring to the non-returner) goes to Akanistha and completely passes away from suffering. The upward transfer after death, reaching the peak of Akanistha, has three distinctions: gradual increase, half increase, and complete increase. Among these, "gradual increase" refers to cultivating meditation in this place, experiencing the taste of the first dhyana, completely falling away from the third dhyana, being born in the Brahma host, and relying on the power of previous habits, cultivating the fourth dhyana. Then, after death and transfer, being born among the Akanistha beings. Because it does not pass through other places in between, it is called "gradual increase." "Half increase" refers to being born in the Pure Abodes after that, also crossing over a few other places in between, transferring to Akanistha, and entering Akanistha. The noble ones are not born in the Great Brahma, why? Because the Great Brahma is a place of viewing, and is the sole master. "Death and transfer in all places" refers to transferring to all other places and then entering Akanistha. The non-returner will never realize a second life in the same place of birth, because it is a special destination. In this way, the state of the non-returner is complete, because wherever they are born, they will never return below. Temporarily cultivating meditation and then going to Akanistha, it should be understood that it is like this. Other than that, going to the peak of existence. The upward transfer without cultivating meditation is reaching the peak of existence. That is experiencing the taste of other samadhis, and being born in all other places, only not entering the Pure Abodes, going to the peak of existence in the order of being born in the formless realm, and completely passing away from suffering. This is practicing shamatha. The former is practicing vipassana. The upward transfer in the middle should also be seen as being able to be liberated from it. Akanistha and the peak of existence itself are because there is no place to go after that, just like a stream-enterer, if they reach the extreme, it is like the seventh time. Temporarily those are the five non-returners who are close to the form realm. The others are the four formless realms.
