The Arhats do not benefit even from seeing extremely unpleasant food, and that is also the reason. Contact, thought, and consciousness are, defiled food, among the three, contact arises from the aggregation of the three, thought is the action of the mind, and consciousness is defiled, these alone are food. All three realms have them, why are the undefiled ones not? The Vaibhashikas say that, like this, the meaning of nourishing existence is the meaning of food, those are born for the purpose of exhausting existence. Furthermore, the sutra says that it makes sentient beings arise and abide, makes them live, and benefits those who seek existence. Having said that, the undefiled dharmas are not like that, so they are not food. For the time being, arising means sentient beings arising, if it is understood like this, then what are those who seek existence? Mind-born and seeking existence, eating scent and intermediate existence, and accomplishment. The Blessed One spoke of intermediate existence with these words. That is called mind-born because it is born from the mind, because it does not have external semen and blood etc. as a cause at all. Because it has the state of seeking existence, it is seeking existence. Because it eats scent, it is eating scent. Because it manifestly tends towards birth, it is manifest accomplishment. The sutra says, after the body with harm is manifestly accomplished, it will be born in the world with harm. Similarly, the sutra says, there is also a person who has abandoned the conforming bond of manifest accomplishment, but not the conforming bond of birth, and four sentences are spoken. The first sentence is the non-returner who is separated from desire from the two realms. The second is to completely pass away from suffering in the intermediate state. The third is the Arhat. The fourth is the person who does not include those situations. Or arising is the Arhat. Those who seek existence are those who have existence. Also, how much food is it that makes sentient beings arise and abide? How much is it that benefits those who seek existence? The Vaibhashikas say that everything is both.

Furthermore, coarse food is also a cause of arising for those who are attached to it. The Blessed One said that the four foods are the root of disease, boils, sores, and suffering, and are the cause of aging and death. It also seems that ideation abides here. For example, a father suffering from a bad harvest turned over a bag full of ashes, saying it was flour. In the meantime, two sons believed him, and they also trusted in it and stayed there for a long time. One of them opened the bag, thinking it was ashes, and lost hope and died. Also, a person shipwrecked in the sea, thinking it was land, went to a large pile of skulls, and he completely clung to it, lost hope and died, so it is said. Among the types of beings, it is also said that from the great ocean, large creatures come out of the water, lay eggs on the sandy beach, cover them with sand, and then return to the ocean. Among them, those mothers who start from the egg and guard it with memory without forgetting, those eggs will not rot. Those who forget, those eggs will rot. Because other foods will become food and accompaniments, those are not mentioned, but it is said that those eggs that start from the mother and are guarded with memory without forgetting, those eggs, at the time of contact, will not rot with memory, and those who forget, those eggs will rot. Also, why are there only four foods? Aren't all defiled dharmas nourishing sentient beings? If you say that, that is also true, but it is mainly said like this: For this, there is a place and a support, two are the meaning of growth, sentient beings, other rebirth and accomplishment, two are the meanings, the order is four types. The place is the body with the senses. What makes it grow is coarse food. The support is the mind and the dharmas arising from the mind. What makes them grow is contact. For the time being, these two are the main factors in nourishing the sentient beings born here. Ideation can again cause the rebirth of sentient beings. What has already been reborn is from the seed of the alaya consciousness completely perfumed by karma.
