Just as a fruit ripens and becomes complete, so too, once actions have ripened, it is impossible for them to ripen again. For example, just as a flower is the proximate cause for producing a fruit, so too, actions should be understood in the same way as producing ripening. The basis is like food and drink being completed. For example, just as once food and drink are completed, the only thing to do is to enjoy them, and not to produce them again, so too, the basis called ripening is similar to that. There is no connection from ripening to other ripenings in other lifetimes. If there were a connection, there would be no liberation. Furthermore, the continuum of life arises in such a way that it does not go beyond the four existences: the intermediate existence (bardo), the existence of birth, the previous existence, and the existence of death. These have already been explained. Among these four existences, the existence of birth is afflicted. By which afflictions? By all the afflictions of its own realm. The Abhidharma masters say that the existence of birth is of whatever realm it is, and is afflicted by all the afflictions of that realm. There is no affliction that prevents the joining of consciousness. It is only afflicted, not by pervasive afflictions. Although that state is weak, for whatever one repeatedly and closely examines, that affliction will be close at that time, because it has been previously projected. The intermediate existence joining consciousness is also the same, and should undoubtedly be understood as afflicted. The other three are not. The other three existences, such as the intermediate existence, are all three: virtuous, afflicted, and neutral. Furthermore, among these existences, which one is associated with which? The three formless realms, excluding the intermediate existence. Because there is nowhere to go in the formless realm, the intermediate existence will not be realized, otherwise there would be no complete cessation. As for the desire and form realms, not to mention cessation, all four existences are present, and are considered to exist.

The arising of beings in dependence has been extensively explained. Furthermore, how do beings abide? Beings abide by food. The Bhagavan himself, having directly known and directly completely awakened as a Buddha, declared one Dharma, namely: "All beings abide by food." This is a statement from the Sutra. What are the foods? There are four kinds of food: coarse and subtle morsel food. Subtle food is for intermediate beings, because they feed on odors. It is also for the gods and the beings of the first kalpa, like pouring sesame oil into sand, it enters into the limbs, because there is no similar cause. Or, because it is the food of subtle beings, it is subtle, such as infants and moisture-born beings. Contact is the second. Mental volition is the third. Consciousness-food is the fourth. Among these, morsel food exists in the desire realm, but not in the form and formless realms. Because those who are free from desire are born there. This is also the nature of the three birth-places. In the desire realm, the sense-fields of smell, taste, and touch that are used are cut off by the nose, tongue, and body and made into morsels, so everything is only morsel food. If it is said that shadows, the sun, fire, and light also exist, how are they food? It is said that this only refers to most cases. Those who can abide without swallowing are also subtle foods, such as bathing and body massage. Why is the sense-field of form not food? Even if it is cut off and swallowed, the sense-field of form is not food. Because the sense-field of form does not help liberation and freedom. What is called food is what benefits the senses and the four great elements, but when the sense-field of form does not exist, it does not benefit one's own senses or the four great elements, because it is not an object, let alone others. When seeing brings happiness and joy to the mind, at that time one also experiences the happiness that arises from it, so contact is food, but form is not. For the sake of liberation, not coming again,
