If someone asks, how many kinds of omniscience does one possess? Not abiding in one, but abiding in the path of seeing, one is fully endowed up to the fifth. For the time being, ordinary beings alone do not possess it. Even a noble one abiding in the path of seeing, up to abiding in the forbearance of the Dharma-knowledge of arising, does not possess it. The Dharma-knowledge of arising possesses one. The subsequent-knowledge of arising possesses two. The Dharma-knowledge of cessation possesses three. The subsequent-knowledge of cessation possesses four. The Dharma-knowledge of the path possesses five. Does one abiding in the path of cultivation possess six? Either one or two. A noble person abiding in the path of cultivation, abiding in the subsequent-knowledge of the path, until one has not obtained detachment from desire in the desire realm, or has fallen away from it, possesses six kinds of omniscience. Having obtained detachment from desire in the desire realm before or after, one possesses only the one omniscience of abandonment similar to the final part. Having obtained the state of Arhat, one possesses only the one omniscience of completely cutting off all afflictions. Having completely fallen away due to being bound by the aspects of the form realm, one again possesses one omniscience of abandonment similar to the final part. Having obtained detachment from desire in the form realm, one possesses two kinds of omniscience: abandonment similar to the final part, and the exhaustion of desire for form. In the formless realm, having completely fallen away due to being bound by the aspects, one also possesses those two kinds of omniscience. Why is the omniscience of a non-returner and an Arhat established as only one, and not many? Like this, detachment from desire from the realm and the attainment of the fruit, therefore add those up. Adding up all the omnisciences, establishing it as one, is due to two reasons: detachment from desire from the realm and the attainment of the fruit. Both of those also exist in those two situations, therefore it should be known that adding up all the abandonments is one omniscience. Furthermore, who abandons or obtains how many omnisciences? Some abandon one, two, five, and six, but do not obtain five. Is it the state of Arhat? Completely falling away from detachment from desire in the desire realm, one abandons one.

I say. A non-returner is one who has abandoned attachment to the form realm. If one falls away from detachment from desire in the desire realm, then one abandons thorough knowledge. For one who proceeds with detachment from desire as a leader, abiding in subsequent knowledge of the path, one abandons five thorough knowledges. When one obtains thorough knowledge that is similar to the final part, then one abandons the previous five thorough knowledges. For the gradual one, by causing detachment from desire in the desire realm, one abandons six thorough knowledges. Likewise, in obtaining as well, by some, only one thorough knowledge is obtained, that is, by someone who obtains what was not previously there. By some, two are obtained, that is, by someone who falls away only from detachment from desire in the formless realm. By some, six are obtained, that is, by someone who falls away from the fruit of non-returning. There is no one who obtains five thorough knowledges. The chapter on thorough knowledge is complete. From the commentary on the Abhidharmakosha, called "Detailed Explanation," it is the fifth chapter of the Kosha.
