A Commentary on the Abhidharmakośa, by Vasubandhu. A Commentary on the Abhidharmakośa. By Vasubandhu. In Sanskrit: Abhidharmakośabhāṣya. In Tibetan: Commentary on the Abhidharmakośa. Homage to youthful Mañjuśrī! Having utterly vanquished the darkness for all beings, rescuing beings from the mire of saṃsāra, to the one who teaches according to reality, I pay homage, and will thoroughly explain the treatise of the Abhidharmakośa. One who wishes to compose a treatise, in order to understand the greatness of their own teacher, first composes homage that precedes the expression of qualities to that one. The term "having utterly vanquished" is spoken from the perspective of the Buddha, the Blessed One. This or by this, darkness is vanquished, therefore it is the vanquisher of darkness. For all, in all ways, darkness is vanquished, therefore it is the one who utterly vanquishes darkness for all. Ignorance is darkness because it is an obstacle to seeing the true meaning of reality. However, the Buddha, the Blessed One, has found the antidote, and for all knowable things, it has become the nature of not arising again in the future, therefore it is utterly vanquished. Therefore, this is the one who utterly vanquishes darkness for all. Although the Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas are also considered vanquishers of darkness for all because they are free from afflictive obscurations, they are not completely vanquished, because for them, there is still non-afflictive ignorance regarding the Buddha's teachings, objects, extremely long periods of time, and the infinite distinctions of meaning. Thus, having truly praised by perfectly accomplishing benefit for oneself, again, truly praising the Blessed One himself by perfectly accomplishing benefit for others is "rescuing beings from the mire of saṃsāra." Saṃsāra is like a mire because it is the place where beings are constantly attached and is difficult to cross over. Beings are sinking there, without refuge, and the Blessed One, endowed with compassion, rescues them as appropriate to their capacity by extending the hands of teaching the sacred Dharma. Because he teaches according to reality, without reversing it, he is the one who teaches according to reality. This shows the method of accomplishing benefit for others, that is, when teaching, he teaches according to reality, thereby rescuing beings from the mire of saṃsāra.

It is not by means of miraculous powers, nor by the power of excellent generosity. To that which accomplishes the benefit of oneself and others in this way, which possesses such perfect qualities, I prostrate. That is, having bowed my head, I prostrate to the one who teaches the meaning as it is. After prostrating, what should be done? It is said, "I will explain the treatise well," because it tames disciples, it is called a treatise. What treatise? It is said, "The Treasury of Abhidharma." What is this called "Abhidharma"? It is "Abhidharma, wisdom, stainless, with its followers." Among these, "wisdom" means to perfectly distinguish the dharmas. "Stainless" means without defilements. "With its followers" means with its retinue. Thus, the five aggregates without outflows will be taught as Abhidharma. This is the ultimate Abhidharma. Conventionally, what are "what" and "treatise" for the sake of attaining it? "What" refers to the wisdom arising from hearing, thinking, and meditating, together with the person, and the innate followers. "Treatise" refers to the collection of that, for the sake of attaining stainless wisdom, hence it is called Abhidharma. In terms of definition, it is called "dharma" because it holds its own characteristics. Therefore, this is the ultimate dharma of nirvana, or it is called Abhidharma because it is directed towards the nature of dharma. The Abhidharma has been explained. If asked how this treatise is a treasury of Abhidharma, the answer is: Because it completely contains its meaning here, or because this is its place, it is called the Treasury of Abhidharma. How does the treatise of Abhidharma completely contain all the precious things here? Therefore, this treatise is like its treasury. Or, because this is extracted from that, the Abhidharma is like the place of this treatise. Therefore, the Abhidharma itself is the treasury of this, so this treatise is the Treasury of Abhidharma. Furthermore, why is the Abhidharma taught? Who taught it first? Thus, the teacher respectfully explains the Treasury of Abhidharma. Without the ability to distinguish the dharmas, there is no way to pacify the afflictions.
