This. Afflictions also wander in the ocean of samsara, therefore the teacher has declared this. As it is said, for what reason, if there is no good distinction of all dharmas, then there is no way to pacify afflictions. Because all afflictions also cause wandering in this great ocean of samsara, in order to make a good distinction of all dharmas, the teacher, the World Honored One, Buddha, declared the Abhidharma. If there is no teaching of Abhidharma, the disciples will not be able to distinguish all dharmas well. The Sarvastivadins say that it was spoken by the World Honored One in a scattered way, and was collected and established by the venerable Katyayaniputra and others, just like the 'Specifically Stated Items' made by the venerable Dharmatrata, divided into categories. What are the dharmas that should be distinguished by the teaching of Abhidharma? It is said: defiled and undefiled dharmas. As it is said, this is a teaching that summarizes all dharmas. Among them, what are the defiled dharmas? All conditioned dharmas except the path are called defiled. Except for the truth of the path, all other conditioned dharmas are defiled. Why? Because on them, all defilements grow. As it is said, although it is also accepted that defilements arise by taking cessation and the truth of the path as objects, they do not grow on them, so they do not become defiled. How they do not grow will be explained in detail below. The defiled dharmas have been explained. What are the undefiled dharmas? The undefiled truth of the path, and the three unconditioned dharmas. As it is said. What are the three? Space and the two cessations. As it is said, what are the two cessations? They are selective cessation and non-selective cessation. Thus, space and the three unconditioned dharmas, and the truth of the path, are undefiled dharmas. Because on them, defilements do not grow. Among the three unconditioned dharmas shown, space is unobstructed, space is unobstructed.

Its nature is where the place of form exists. It is separate from cessation through individual examination. That which is separate from contaminated dharmas is cessation through individual examination. Individually examining suffering and other noble truths is individual examination, which is a distinction of wisdom. The cessation to be attained by that is cessation through individual examination. Intermediate words should be made inconspicuous, like a chariot combined with oxen is called an ox-cart. Is there only one cessation through individual examination for all contaminated dharmas? Answer: No. Then what is it like? It is individual, individual. As many things as are combined, so many things are separated. If it were not so, then by realizing the cessation of afflictions to be abandoned by seeing suffering, it would follow that the cessation of all afflictions would be realized. If it were not so, then cultivating the remaining antidotes would become meaningless. Then, what is the meaning of the statement that "cessation is not the same"? The meaning of that statement is that nothing is a cause like this, and this is not a similar cause of anything either. It is not the case that "this has no similarity whatsoever." Cessation through individual examination has been explained. Permanently obstructing arising, other cessations are not through individual examination. For future dharmas, whatever permanently obstructs their arising, other than separation, is cessation not through individual examination. This is not attained through individual examination. Then what is it? It is attained through the lack of complete causes. For example, when the eye and mind are focused on one form, other forms, as well as sounds, smells, tastes, and tactile objects, become past. And the five aggregates of consciousness that focus on them cannot arise again, because they have no power to focus on past objects. Therefore, their cessation not through individual examination is attained through the lack of complete causes. Here, there are four possibilities: There are also dharmas that can only attain cessation through individual examination. For example, contaminated past, present, and future dharmas.
