It is a synonym for saying "it is the support of cessation." If it is said in this way, it will also be in accordance with the extensively explained treatise in the Vibhajyavāda, "What is the eye faculty? It is the support of eye consciousness, namely form." The five faculties have been explained. Now, the five objects will be explained. First of all, there are two kinds of form, namely color and shape. There are four kinds of color, namely blue and so on. The others are its branches. There are eight kinds of shape, namely from long shape and so on up to non-flat shape. Furthermore, the source of form itself is said to be twenty kinds, namely blue, yellow, white, red, long, short, square, round, high, low, flat, non-flat, cloud, smoke, dust, fog, shadow, sun, light, and darkness. Some consider space as one color, so there are twenty-one kinds. Among them, flat shape is a uniform shape, and non-flat shape is a non-uniform shape. Fog is mist, sun is the light of the sun, light is the light of the moon, stars, fire, medicine, and jewels. Shadow is where objects appear, and the opposite of this is darkness. The rest are not distinguished in detail because they are easy to understand. Among the sources of form, some are color but have no shape, namely blue, yellow, red, white, shadow, sun, light, and darkness. Some have shape but no color, namely the nature of the expression of the body in the direction of long shape and so on. There are also those who have both, namely the remaining sources of form. Others say that because blue and so on and long shape and so on seem to be completely determined, only the sun and light are colors. If so, how can one thing have two? Because both appear, it exists, but this is only an existence in knowledge, not an actual existence. If so, then the expression of the body should also be included. The source of form has been explained. Sound has eight kinds. Finished.

And what arises from the cause of the unapprehended great elements, showing sentient and non-sentient beings, are four types. Moreover, due to the distinction between pleasant and unpleasant, they become eight types. Among them, what arises from the cause of the apprehended great elements is like the sound of hands and speech. What arises from the cause of the unapprehended great elements is like the sound of wind, forests, and water. Showing sentient beings is the expressive sound of language. Others are not showing sentient beings. Some others say that there are also sounds arising from the cause of apprehended and unapprehended great elements, like the sound produced by the collision of hands and clay drums. Regarding this, it should be denied in the same way that one does not accept that one subtle particle of color produces four, with two pairs as the cause. The explanation of sound is finished. Taste has six types, due to the distinctions of sweet, sour, salty, spicy, bitter, and astringent. Smell has four types, fragrant and foul smells being two types, because of equality and inequality. In the scriptures, it says that there are three types: fragrant smell, foul smell, and equal smell. Tangible objects are of eleven natures. The nature of tangible substances is eleven, namely the four great elements, as well as smoothness, roughness, heaviness, lightness, coldness, hunger, and thirst. Among them, the elements will be explained below. Smoothness is pliability. Roughness is coarseness. Heaviness is what is used to measure things. The opposite is lightness. Coldness is wanting warmth. Hunger is wanting to consume. Thirst is wanting to be thirsty. Because the result is inferred from the cause, for example: the arising of Buddhas is happiness, teaching the Dharma is also happiness, the Sangha in harmony is happiness, the asceticism of those in harmony is happiness. Just like that. Among them, in the form realm, there is no hunger and thirst. The rest are there. If one cannot measure each piece of clothing, one can measure them when accumulated. There is no harmful cold, but there is beneficial

Yes, it is. Regarding the many forms described, sometimes a single object generates the eye consciousness, at which time it becomes possible to distinguish its specific form. Sometimes it is many objects, at which time it is not possible to distinguish specifically. For example, observing an army arrayed from a distance, or looking at the various colors and shapes of a collection of jewels. The consciousnesses of the ear and so on should also be understood in the same way. As for body consciousness, some say that when it is extremely numerous, it is generated by the four great elements, as well as one such as smoothness, and the five tangibles. Others say that it is generated by all eleven. If that is the case, since they focus on the general characteristic, wouldn't the five aggregates of consciousness become objects of the general characteristic, and not objects of their own specific characteristics? Answer: These are considered to be objects of the specific characteristics of the sense bases, but not of the specific characteristics of objects, so there is no fault. This should be examined: when the two faculties of body and tongue simultaneously encounter an object, which consciousness arises first? Answer: Whichever has the greater object. When the objects are equal, then the tongue consciousness arises first, because it is desired to eat, and therefore the continuum is connected. The five faculties, the five objects, and how they are apprehended have also been explained. Now, that which is non-revealing form is to be described, it is to be declared: Of distraction and mindlessness also, Whatever is the connection of virtue and non-virtue, Having the great elements as its cause, That is said to be non-revealing form. 'Distracted mind' means also of the mind that is other than that. 'Mindless also' means also of non-perception and cessation samāpatti. The word 'also' indicates that it is also of the non-distracted, with mind. 'Virtue and non-virtue' means the virtuous and the non-virtuous. 'Whatever is the connection' means the continuum. Because there is also a continuum of attainment, in order to differentiate, it is said, 'Having the great elements as its cause.' The Vaibhāṣikas say that the meaning of 'having as its cause' is the meaning of cause. Production and so on are the nature of cause.
