Therefore, it is said thus. That which is called "non-manifesting form," the term "that is" is for the purpose of knowing its name. Although it is the nature of form and function, it does not make others aware like manifesting form, so it is non-manifesting form. The term "forgetting" indicates that it is the teacher's word. In short, the form arising from manifesting form and samadhi, whether virtuous or non-virtuous, is non-manifesting form. What are those that are said to be "caused by the great elements"? The elements are the earth element, water, fire, and wind elements. These four are elements because they hold the form that is held by their own characteristics and causes. The "four great elements" are great because they are the basis of all other forms. Furthermore, those aggregates of earth, water, fire, and wind that have a large share in their function are great in those places. Also, where are the functions of those elements accomplished? What is their nature? It is said that "holding and other functions are accomplished." As it is said, these earth, water, fire, and wind elements accomplish the functions of holding, gathering, maturing, and increasing in order. Increasing should be understood as increasing and expanding, and these are their functions. Their nature is, in order, solidity, moisture, warmth, and movement. Solidity is the earth element. Moisture is the water element. Warmth is the fire element. Movement is the wind element. This causes the stream of arising to move to another place, so it is movement, like the flickering of a lamp flame. In the Abhidharma and Sutra, what is the wind element? It is said to be "lightness." In the Abhidharma, it is also said that "form is caused by lightness." Therefore, whatever is the nature of movement is known as the wind element, and its nature is made clear by its function. What is the difference between earth, etc., and the earth element, etc.? It is said to be worldly terminology. Color and shape are called earth. When indicating earth in this way, color and

It shows shape. Just like the earth, so are water and fire. In worldly terms, color and shape themselves are referred to as earth. The collection of wind is the element itself. Whatever is the element of wind, in the world it is called wind. It is similar to that. Just as in worldly terms, color and shape are called earth, so too for wind, it is said blue wind, round wind. Why is this non-discriminating part called the form aggregate? Because it is destructible. The Blessed One said: Monks, because it has form and is destructible, therefore it is called the form-appropriation aggregate. How is it destructible? For example, when hands come together and touch, even touch is destructible, as the Blessed One extensively explained. Being destructible means being liable to harm, which is synonymous, as it is said in the categories of meaning: If one seeks desire, and a being's body generates longing, if those desires are not obtained, then one will be harmed as if pricked by a thorn. What is the harm of form? It is the generation of complete change. Others say that being destructible is obstruction. If that is so, then particles would not be form, because they are without obstruction. A single particle of form existing separately is impossible. That which exists in a collection is indeed destructible. If that is so, then the past and future would not be form. But because they have already existed in form, and will exist in form, and are of the same kind, they are form, like firewood. If that is so, then non-discriminating things would not be form. But because non-discriminating things can be harmed in discriminating things, they exist in form, just as when a tree sways, the shadow also sways. It is not so because there is no change; if discriminating things cease, then non-discriminating things will also cease, just as without a tree there is no shadow. Others say that it is because the arising of the basis exists in form. If that is so, then eye consciousness and so forth also exist in form because the basis exists in form.

Otherwise, it would become the form aggregate itself. This close application is inconsistent, because non-manifest form depends on phenomena, just as trees depend on shadows and gems depend on light. Eye consciousness and so on do not depend on the eye and so on in this way, because they are merely the reason for their arising. To say that trees depend on shadows and candles depend on light is not just the assertion of the Vaibhashikas, because they admit that the subtle particles of color such as shadows depend on their respective four great elements. Even though shadows and light depend on them, they also admit that the non-manifest great elements also perish, so non-manifest form cannot depend in this way. Therefore, this cannot be answered. Others think that the supports of eye consciousness and so on are different, some are changeable, such as the eye and so on, and some are unchangeable, such as the mind. Non-manifest form is not like that, so there is no fault of similarity. Therefore, to say that because it has form, it is form, is reasonable, they answer in this way. What are the ones that show the nature of the form aggregate? Only those sense bases are called the twelve sources and the ten realms. The establishment of the twelve sources is the twelve sources, that is, from the eye source and the form source, to the body source and the touch source. The establishment of the eighteen realms is just those, that is, the eighteen realms, from the eye realm and the form realm, to the body realm and the touch realm. The establishment of the form aggregate and its twelve sources and eighteen realms has been explained. Next, feeling will be discussed separately. Feeling is experiencing, and there are three kinds of experiencing, which is the feeling aggregate, that is, pleasant feeling, painful feeling, and neither painful nor pleasant feeling. If divided further, there are six kinds of feeling, that is, from the feeling arising from the touch arising from the aggregation of the eye root, to the feeling arising from the aggregation of the mind root.
