Furthermore, it should be understood that one realm encompasses all, that is, the realm of phenomena is encompassed by the aggregates of form, the sense-sphere of mind, and the realm of phenomena. No matter where this encompassing arises from, it is by its own nature, and not by something else, that it is understood. Why? Because it is not associated with other things. Phenomena are not associated with other things. Thus, whatever is not associated cannot be encompassed by ease. For example, the eye faculty is encompassed by the aggregate of form, the sense-sphere of the eye, the realms, suffering, and the truth of origination, because it is their very nature. Because it is not associated with their nature, it is not encompassed by other aggregates, etc. For example, just as the four encompassing things encompass the wheels, so whatever is said to be one thing encompassing another is occasional, and should be regarded as a nominal designation. If it is said that since there are two eyes, ears, and noses, wouldn't it become twenty-one realms? The answer is no. It is like this: Although there are two eyes, etc., their class, sphere of activity, and consciousness are the same, therefore it is one realm. Among them, the class is the same because both are the nature of the eye. The sphere of activity is the same because the object of both is form. The consciousness is the same because both are the basis of one eye consciousness. Therefore, the eye realm is indeed one. Similarly, it should be applied to the ears and noses as well. For the sake of adornment, the two arise. Although the eyes, etc., are one realm, the two arise because the basis is to be adorned. If it were not so, if the basis of the eyes and ears were one, and the nostrils were one, it would be extremely unsightly. The aggregates, realms, and sense-spheres have been explained. Now, the meaning of aggregates, realms, and sense-spheres will be stated here, that is, the meaning of accumulation, place of birth, and type. These are the aggregates, sense-spheres, and realms. In the sutra it says: Whatever form there is, whether past, future, or present, internal or external, coarse or subtle, inferior or excellent.
