Because of dependence, it is called the feeling of the body. The feeling that arises from the gathering and touching of the mind is called the feeling of the mind because it depends only on the mind. Furthermore, does feeling arise after contact, or does it arise simultaneously? The Vaibhashikas say that because they are the cause of arising together, they are simultaneous. How can two things that arise together be established as the producer and the produced? How can it not be established? Because there is no power, for a dharma that has already arisen, the dharma has no power. That which is said to be that which arises together itself has no producer and no produced is the same as saying that for a dharma that has already arisen, the dharma has no power, therefore there is no difference from the proposition. Then, it would follow that they arise mutually. Because it is desired, there is no fault, it is only that one does not wish the cause of arising together to be the mutual result. This is what is desired, but the Sutra does not accept that contact and feeling are mutually cause and effect, because it is said in the Sutra that relying on the gathering and touching of the eye, the feeling that arises from the gathering and touching of the eye arises. It is not that relying on the feeling that arises from the gathering and touching of the eye, the gathering and touching of the eye arises. Because it contradicts the nature of the producer, it is also not reasonable, because any dharma that exists as the producer of any dharma is considered to be different in time from it. For example, the seed is earlier and the sprout is later; the milk is earlier and the yogurt is later; the striking is earlier and the sound is later; the mind is earlier and the consciousness of the mind is later, and so on. It is not that cause and effect are not established as prior and posterior things, but they are also established as simultaneous things, for example, eye consciousness and so on, eye and form and so on, and the four great elements and what is transformed from the four great elements and so on. For that, if one thinks that the senses and objects are earlier and consciousness is later, and that the collection of causes of the four great elements and what is transformed from the four great elements is earlier, and the latter arises from the former, what is there to refute? The Vaibhashikas say, then what about sprouts and shadows, etc.?

It is said that touch and feeling are also similar to that. Others say that feeling arises after touch. The sense organs and objects come first, followed by consciousness. The combination of these three is touch. Due to touch, feeling arises in the third moment. If that is the case, then not all consciousnesses will have feeling, and not all consciousnesses will be touch. That is not a fault, because the feeling present in the later touch arises from the cause of the earlier touch, so all touches are accompanied by feeling. All consciousnesses are also touch. This would become unreasonable. If asked what is unreasonable about this, it is like this: the objects of touch are different, and the feeling present in the later touch arises from the cause of the earlier touch. For example, the feeling arising from touch that focuses on different kinds will focus on others, or it will focus on others besides what is in accordance with the mind. Then, at that time, touch is the changed consciousness without feeling, and the consciousness with feeling before it is not touch, because the cause is not complete. If that is the case, what fault is there? Saying that there are ten or more grounds in all sentient beings, this is the loss of the definition of the many-grounded. From where is this definition established? From the treatises. We take the sutras as the standard, we do not take the treatises as the standard, the Blessed One said that one should rely on the sutras. Or, saying that it exists in all minds, this is not the meaning of the many-grounded. Then, what is the meaning of the many-grounded? There are three grounds: the ground with investigation and analysis, the ground with only analysis without investigation, the ground without investigation and without analysis, the virtuous ground, the non-virtuous ground, the unspecified ground. Again, there are three: the ground of learning, the ground of non-learning, the ground of neither learning nor non-learning. Among them, those who have all these grounds are the many-grounded. Those who only exist in virtue are the virtuous many-
