To create merit and happiness for the sake of happiness in the next life; to create unwavering [karma] for the sake of neither happiness nor suffering. To create non-meritorious deeds for the sake of happiness in this life. These are the formations caused by ignorance here. Due to the power of karmic propulsion, the continuum of consciousness is connected to the intermediate state, and it goes to that place like a blazing fire. This is the consciousness caused by the formations here. As explained in this way, the limb of consciousness is shown. What is consciousness? It is the six aggregates of consciousness. This explanation is reasonable. Moreover, with consciousness as the forerunner, the five aggregates of name and form arise in that place. Because it is declared in this way in the Differentiation Treatise. After that, name and form fully mature, and the six sense bases arise in sequence. After that, when encountering an object, consciousness arises, and from the union of the three, contact is experienced, such as pleasure. After that, there are three kinds of feeling. After that, there is craving, that is, the feeling tormented by suffering, and for pleasure, it is desire-craving. For pleasure and neither pleasure nor suffering, it is form-craving. For neither pleasure nor suffering, it is formless-craving. After that, from craving for pleasant feelings, grasping such as desire arises. Among them, desire refers to the five objects of desire. Views refer to the sixty-two views, as stated in the Brahma Net Sutra. Morality refers to abandoning immoral morality. Asceticism refers to dog and cow asceticism, etc., as stated in the scriptures, naked ascetics, etc., refer to those who are naked and without clothes. Brahmins, cowherds, Ajivikas, etc., take up staffs, water pots, hair knots, ashes, tridents, and nakedness, etc. The statement of self refers to the body, because the statement of self exists in it, it is called the statement of self. Others say that it refers to the view of self and pride, how do these two become the statement of self?

If it is said to be you, it is because it is said that these two are also mine. Because of no-self, clinging to saying 'I', this is called appropriation. In language, monks, the so-called 'I' and 'mine' are merely ordinary people who are ignorant and follow after what is falsely established. As it is said in the sutra, 'Here there is no I or mine.' The so-called appropriation is the desire and attachment to them. As the Blessed One said, 'How does appropriation occur from everything?' It refers to the desire and attachment to them. Furthermore, that which causes future existence, etc., by the condition of grasping is existence. As it is said in the sutra: 'Venerable Ananda, the karma that causes the manifestation and accomplishment of future existence is also existence here.' Conditioned by existence, the manner in which consciousness enters, that is, future birth, is birth, which is the five aggregates. If there is birth, there is aging and death, as taught in the sutra. Therefore, the so-called 'only this' is being separated from 'I' and 'mine'. The so-called 'great mass of suffering' refers to the collection of suffering without beginning or end. The so-called 'arising truly' refers to birth. The tenet of the Vaibhashikas is the same as what was said before. Furthermore, what is the meaning of ignorance? It is that which is not knowledge. Then, there would also be faults with the eye, etc. If so, then it is without knowledge. If so, then it would become nothing at all, because that is also not knowledge. Therefore, the opposite of knowledge is another dharma, like ignorance, unfriendliness, falsehood, etc. If we reverse it and ask what is friendliness, then in its opposite direction, there are some unfriendly things, but it is not something other than friendliness, nor is it the absence of friendliness. The so-called truth is truth. Words that are contrary to this are untruth, as well as non-dharma, non-meaning, non-conduct, etc., just as the opposites of dharma, etc. Similarly, ignorance should also be regarded as another dharma that is contrary to knowledge. Why is this? Because it is shown to be a conditioned phenomenon.
