If it can be shown to be like... then it depends on whether there is any residue of ignorance. Why are different kinds shown as ignorance? Even if the five aggregates are already present in those states, whatever is present or absent, and whatever is determined to be present or absent, that alone is a limb. Arhats have five aggregates, but the formations do not arise, and non-merit and consciousness that tends towards immovability, and craving, etc., are also not, so the meaning of the sutra is just as it is shown. Regarding the four statements that are made, if future dharmas are dependently originated, or what are the dependently originated dharmas? The sutra says that it is from ignorance to old age and death, which contradicts the sutra. Or, one must not want to establish the limbs of birth and old age and death in the future, so dividing it into three parts becomes unreasonable. Other schools say: Whether the Tathagatas appear or not, these dharmic natures are permanent. Therefore, they say that dependent origination is unconditioned. This, in the sense of intention, is both so and not so. For the time being, how is it so? Or how is it not so? If the meaning is that whether the Tathagatas appear or not, always relying on ignorance, etc., formations, etc., arise in various ways, and not without relying, or relying on others, then it is never so, so dependent origination is permanent. If that is what is said, then it should be accepted. However, if the meaning is that dependent origination refers to the existence of some other permanent thing, then it should be denied, saying that it is not so. Why? Because arising is the characteristic of the conditioned. Other permanent things cannot be the characteristic of impermanence either. Because arising means production, what is the relationship between this and ignorance, etc.? Why would it be said that they are dependently originated? It is also called permanent, and it is also called dependently originated, therefore the words...

Its meaning will also become powerless. Again, what is the meaning of the word "dependent arising"? The so-called "dependent arising" means meeting. "Iti" (Tibetan, Devanagari, Romanized Sanskrit, literal Chinese meaning) means going. Because of the close translation, in order to fully translate the essential meaning of the language, the meaning of "from meeting" is the meaning of "dependent". "Pada" (Tibetan, Devanagari, Romanized Sanskrit, literal Chinese meaning) means existence. "Sam" (Tibetan, Devanagari, Romanized Sanskrit, literal Chinese meaning) and "Ud" (Tibetan, Devanagari, Romanized Sanskrit, literal Chinese meaning) above mean arising. Therefore, arising from meeting is dependent arising. The meaning of this word is not reasonable. Why? Because two actions of one agent are the cause of the past tense. For example, just like taking a bath and then eating, what meets first and then arises later does not exist before arising. Without an agent, there is no action. Here it is said: If meeting precedes arising, it is not reasonable because it does not exist. If they exist simultaneously, it is because it acts before it is established. This is not a fault. For the time being, for the grammarian, in what state does something arise? Is it present or future? This question should be written down. What will it become? If it is said that the present arises, if it has not yet arisen, how can it be present? Or if something that has already arisen arises again, it will lead to endlessness. If it is said that the future arises, how can what does not exist be the agent itself? Without an agent, how can action be accomplished? Therefore, the state in which something arises is like meeting that state itself. Which state will arise? It is the future that is manifestly directed towards arising. That state itself is called meeting with the cause. This view of the grammarian, that is, the distinction between agent and action, is also not established. The so-called "arising" is the agent; the so-called "arising" is the action. But apart from the meaning of "arising", no other action is seen. Therefore, there is no blame on the words. The meaning of the word is, if this exists, this will arise; because this arises, therefore this arises, this is the meaning of dependent arising.
