It is like this. Name and form are from then on, up to the six sense spheres. From the connecting consciousness onwards, the state until the six sense spheres have not arisen is called name and form. Saying "up to the arising of the four sense spheres" is acceptable, but saying "six sense spheres" is for the sake of determining it at that time. That is up to the union of the three. From the arising of the six sense spheres, until the three—faculty, object, and consciousness—have not come together, that state is called the six sense spheres, up to the point where touch can know the cause of pleasure and pain, etc. Touch is the union of the three, and from that, until the state where one cannot completely cut off the cause of the three feelings, that is called touch. After being able to completely cut it off, up to feeling and sexual desire. The state of feeling is up to the point where one does not fully engage in sexual desire. Craving is: having desire for enjoyment and sexual activity, the state of the qualities of desire and engaging in sexual desire, until one has not entered into completely seeking an object, is called existence. Grasping is the state of enjoying desires, completely running around in order to obtain them, the state where one enters into completely seeking in order to obtain an object, and running around everywhere, that is called grasping. When running around completely like that, until the karma that will produce a result, that is existence. When running around completely in order to obtain those objects, even existence and so on, that is its existence. That karma again, after dying and transmigrating from here, will connect in the next life, that connection is birth. Whichever of the limbs is consciousness here, that is birth in another life. From then until feeling is old age and death. From after birth until the state of feeling is old age and death, the four limbs here—name and form, the six sense spheres, and touch, and feeling—whichever they are, those themselves are old age and death in others. In that way, those are the twelve limbs. Dependent origination is spoken of in four ways: momentary, continuous, relational, and conditional.

What is a moment like? A moment has twelve branches, that is to say: the ignorance of killing due to the power of attachment is ignorance. All consciousness is formations. Discriminating things individually is consciousness. The four aggregates that arise together with consciousness are name and form. The faculties that truly abide in name and form are the six senses. The gathering of the six senses is contact. Experiencing contact is feeling. All attachment is craving. All the entanglements that are correspondingly possessed are grasping. The actions of body and speech that are aroused by this are existence. The arising of these actions is birth. Complete maturation is aging. Destruction is death. Again, it is said that momentariness and relatedness are as stated in the treatises. What does it say in the treatises? What is dependent origination? All conditioned phenomena. What are the phenomena of dependent origination? It is said that it is all conditioned phenomena. Temporality refers to the uninterrupted continuity of the five aggregates with twelve branches in the three times. It itself is also continuous. Among these, from what aspect did the Bhagavan consider this? This is considered to be temporary. If each branch has all five aggregates, then why are only the dharmas of ignorance, etc., proclaimed? Because it is the main thing, the branch is proclaimed. In the case where ignorance is the main thing, it is said to be ignorance, in the case where formations are the main thing, it is said to be formations, from formations to old age and death is the main thing, only old age and death are said, there is no contradiction. Also, why are the twelve branches mentioned in the sutras, and what is dependent origination in the treatises? All conditioned phenomena, why is it said differently like this? What is said in the sutras has a hidden meaning. What is in the Abhidharma is characterized by its own nature. Similarly, temporality, momentariness, continuity, relatedness, showing as sentient beings and showing as non-sentient beings, etc., are different.

It is so. Furthermore, why does the sutra only teach the manifestation in sentient beings? It is to eliminate ignorance about the past, future, and present. Therefore, it is in three parts. Among them, ignorance about the past extreme is like this: How did I come to be in the past? Or did I not come to be? What did I become? How did I come to be? Such doubts arise. Ignorance about the future extreme is like this: How will it come to be in the future? Such extensive doubts arise. Ignorance in the present is like this: What is this? How is this? What exists? What changes? Such doubts arise. Thus, in order to eliminate these three kinds of ignorance, the sutra only shows dependent origination as three parts in sentient beings: ignorance, formations, birth, old age and death, from consciousness to existence, in order. As it is said in the sutra itself: Monks, when a monk sees dependent origination and the laws of dependent origination with correct wisdom, as it is, he will not follow the past extreme, thinking, 'How did I come to be in the past?' This is extensively explained. Others say that in order to eliminate ignorance about the future extreme, craving, grasping, and existence are also shown, saying that these are the causes of those. Furthermore, the twelve links of dependent origination should be understood as the nature of afflictions, karma, and four and three. Among them, three are afflictions. Three links are of the nature of afflictions, namely ignorance, craving, and grasping. Two are karma. Two links are of the nature of karma, namely formations and existence. Seven are the base. The seven links, namely consciousness, name and form, the six sense sources, contact, feeling, birth, old age and death, are the basis of karma and afflictions, therefore they are the links of the base. Just as the seven links are the base, so they are also the result. The seven links themselves are the result.
