As to how long does it remain? A monk says, it is not certain, until the collection of births is not found. At that time, there is no other projection, because they are of the same kind. If it is not so, then at that time it is exhausted, and it will also lead to the state of death. If the heap of flesh becomes as large as Mount Meru, and all of them are filled with worms, then would those intermediate states of existence only stay there? Where should it be said that they come from? This does not appear in the sutras or treatises, but like this, those tiny beings who are manifestly attached to smells and tastes, because they are countless, when they smell the smells, those who are manifestly attached to smells and tastes, when they die, will quickly create the karma of becoming worms. That existence will not become the disease of worms. Or, without being devoured by demons, merely at the time when many conditions are ripe, the maturation of those karmas will manifest, which can be found, otherwise it will not. Just like even if there is the karma of a wheel-turning king, a wheel-turning king will only appear when the lifespan of beings reaches eighty thousand years, or when the lifespan is the longest, and not at other times. Therefore, the Blessed One said that the maturation of the karma of sentient beings is inconceivable. The monk Vasumitra says that it remains for seven days. If the collection of existence has not been found, it will die and transfer, and after dying and transferring, it will be born there again. Others say that it is seven weeks. The Vaibhashikas say that because it is seeking existence, it goes quickly, and because it connects itself, it remains for a short time. When the conditions are not gathered, and it is certain that it will be born in that place, only karma will lead the gathering of conditions. If it is not so, it will be born in a place different from that place. Others say that it will be born like this, for example, cows mate a lot in the summer, dogs in the autumn, bears in the winter, horses in the spring, ewes and

Jackals, donkeys, and she-bears have no fixed time, so whatever is born among cattle at other times will be born among cows. Whatever is born among dogs will be born among jackals. Whatever is born among horses will be born among donkeys. It is said that whatever is born among bears will be born among she-bears. Because the projection is the same, the intermediate existence of another species cannot be born into another similar species, so that is not to be said. Furthermore, the intermediate existence that arises in order to go to the place to be gone to is: Because the mind is perverted, it rashly goes to the place to be gone to. Now, the eye arising from the power of karma sees its own birthplace even though it is far away. Seeing the parents having intercourse there, if it is male, it develops male desire for the mother. If it is female, it develops female desire for the father. The opposite is the arising of anger. It is said in the scriptures that for the Gandharva, whichever of the two minds, whether it has desire or anger, will manifest. That is because of the perversion of both, so it goes to that place, and it delights in that state of wanting happiness. Having gone to the impure place of the womb, it arises with joy and abides. Then, its body becomes hard, and the intermediate existence also ceases, so it is born. If it is male, it leans to the right side of the mother's belly, facing backwards, and is born squatting. If it is female, it leans to the left side of the mother's belly, facing the front of the belly. However, if it is a hermaphrodite, it remains as it has desire. Because all the senses of the intermediate existence are complete, it is not incomplete in senses, therefore, it remains like the sight of a woman and a man entering and abiding. Later, the body is born and becomes a hermaphrodite. Now this should be examined: By what power of karma do only the great elements of semen and blood become the basis of this sense?

From those karmas, do they arise solely relying on those? Some say that it is only those, semen and blood, and it ceases without senses. The seed and sprout cease, and in the manner of birth, whatever is called the soft and tender thing with senses is born. If it is said that way, it is said to be born from the impure soft and tender things of the parents. Likewise, monks, you have been growing in the dung heap for a long time. The sutra says, "Took a drop of blood," which is a good statement. Others say that it is only other arising, like a worm in a leaf. Considering that it is born relying on impurity, it is not contradictory to the sutra. For the time being, being born from an egg and entering the birthplace of womb-born beings is like that. For others, it should be said according to the circumstances. It seems that the reason for this is as follows: smell and place, there are other manifest desires. To be born in a birthplace from warmth and moisture, just like karma, one goes to a clean or unclean birthplace because one desires smell. To be born in a birthplace of spontaneous birth is because one desires a place. How does one desire a place in hells? Because the mind is inverted. They are struck by wind and very cold rain, and seeing the fire burning in hells, they desire warmth and run. Or, they are struck by hot wind, sun, and the suffering of fire, and seeing coolness in hells, they desire coolness and run. Former teachers say that they have done whatever karma that will cause them to be born in that state, and they also see those beings and run. In this regard, the intermediate existence of gods goes upwards as if rising from a seat. Humans and animals, and hungry ghosts, are like humans, etc. The hells are head down. Those with true vows and ascetics, who slander the upright, those people will be head down and fall into hell alone. Because there is such a verse that appears. Because the mind is inverted, it is a sharp place, a place to walk.
