In that flame, which beings live long, are skilled in the destruction of the world, more skilled than in formation, those beings are afraid, to those beings say, friends, do not be afraid! Friends, do not be afraid! This flame previously also burned the empty palace of Brahma, causing it to cease to exist, thus exhaling, thus declaring, how do they have different perceptions? Therefore, they have different perceptions because they perceive the coming and going of the flame, and because they perceive fear and non-fear, but not because they perceive pleasure and pain, and neither pleasure nor pain. Thus it is explained. There are also sentient beings with form, the same body, the same perception, for example: the gods of the Bright Realm. This is called the fourth abode of consciousness. What is meant by the same perception is perceiving happiness. Among them, in the first dhyana, the perception of afflictions is the same perception. In the second dhyana, the perception of virtue is different perception. In the third dhyana, the perception arising from Vipaka is the same perception. The three formless realms are as stated in the sutras. Thus, their abodes of consciousness are seven. Here, what is the abode of consciousness? Appropriately, the five aggregates and four aggregates corresponding to them. Why are the remaining ones not abodes of consciousness? For example: the remaining ones possess destroyers. If asked what the remaining ones are? They are the evil destinies, the fourth dhyana, and the peak of existence. In these places, there are things that destroy consciousness, therefore these are not abodes of consciousness. What is meant by destroyer? It is that which destroys consciousness. Among them, in the evil destinies, the destroyer is the feeling of suffering, because it is a harmer. In the fourth dhyana, it is non-perception and the attainment of non-perception. At the peak of existence, it is the cessation attainment, because it cuts off the continuum of mind. Again it is said, where do these beings reside

If one wants to go there, and those who dwell there do not want to move, then that is said to be a dwelling place of consciousness. But in the evil destinies, neither of these two conditions exists. In the fourth dhyana, beings are those who possess the intention to move. Ordinary beings want to enter a state without perception, while noble ones go to the Pure Abodes. The peak of existence is not a dwelling place of consciousness because its movement is not clear. The seven dwelling places of consciousness as previously described, as well as the peak of existence and beings without perception, are said to be the nine abodes of beings. In these places, beings dwell completely according to their own desires. Since they dwell unwillingly, it is not another place. What is the other place? It is the evil destinies. In those places, beings are unwillingly driven to dwell by the demons of karma, and they do not dwell happily. Therefore, those places are not abodes of beings, but are like prisons. In other sutras, it is said that there are seven dwelling places of consciousness. In another, it is said that there are also four abodes. What are these four? The dwelling place of consciousness is close to form, also close to feeling, close to perception, and close to mental formations. What is their nature? They are, in order, the four aggregates with defilements. These are also only their own realms, not other realms. Why? Because a dwelling is reliance, and consciousness does not rely on aggregates of unequal realms due to the power of craving. Why is consciousness not called a dwelling place of consciousness? The Vaibhashikas say that because there is no dwelling place after completely abandoning the dweller. The dweller itself cannot be called a dwelling place, just as the king himself is not the king's decree. Or, if it is said that those dharmas upon which consciousness dwells and operates in the manner of a boat and softness, those dharmas are called dwelling places of consciousness. But consciousness itself does not dwell on consciousness and operate, therefore it is not said so.
