Those twenty are the desire realm. If counted with the container world, it extends up to the wheel of wind. The seventeen places above this desire realm are the form realm. How so? There, each of the meditation grounds is the third. It is said that the first, second, and third dhyanas each have three grounds. The fourth has eight. Among them, the first dhyana is the Brahmas, the Brahma attendants, and the Great Brahma. The second is the lesser light, immeasurable light, and radiant light. The third is the lesser virtue, immeasurable virtue, and pervasive virtue. The fourth is the cloudless, merit-born, great fruit, non-affliction, non-heat, well-appearing, extremely appearing, and Akanistha. Thus, these seventeen places, together with the beings residing there, are the form realm. The Kashmiris say there are sixteen. Only the Brahma attendants say that the place of the Great Brahma is the most supreme, manifesting as a single, unique lord as if squeezed out, with no other ground. There is no place in the formless realm. For non-form dharmas, there is no place. Past, future, non-manifesting, and non-form dharmas are definitely not located in a place. That is, from birth there are four kinds. The births of the formless realm, in terms of distinctions, are four, as follows: the sphere of limitless space, the sphere of limitless consciousness, the sphere of nothingness, and the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception. For them, there is no above or below determined by place. Those who have attained samadhi are born in the place where they die. And the intermediate existence of those who die from there is also accomplished there. Just as the mindstream of sentient beings with form arises in dependence on form, on what does the mindstream of formless beings depend? There, it also depends on class and life. The mindstream is dependent. Dharma.

The Vaibhashikas say that it arises depending on similar categories and the life force. So, why doesn't the mind stream of sentient beings with form also arise depending on those two alone? Because of its weak power. Then, why is it powerful? Because it arises from the distinction of meditative absorption, and that meditative absorption is one with the perception of being without form. So, since it is powerful, it should arise from that alone, what need is there for a basis? Just as the similar categories and life force of sentient beings with form arise depending on form, it should also be stated what those without form depend on to arise. On those two mutually. So, why don't those two mutually depend on each other in beings with form? Because those two are weak. Why is it powerful? Because it arises from the distinction of meditative absorption. The Sutrantikas say that it is the mind stream, and the mind is also the same as the self that arises from the mind, so there is no other basis for the minds of sentient beings without form. Furthermore, the cause that propels the mind stream, if it is not separated from desire for form, then it arises together with form, and arises depending on form. If its cause is separated from desire for form, then it arises without depending on form, because it turns its back on that cause. Also, why are these called the desire realm, the form realm, and the formless realm? Because they hold their own characteristics, they are realms. The realm with desire is the desire realm. The realm with form is the form realm. Because the intermediate words are not explicitly stated, like a vajra finger ring and a Narikela drink. Here, because it is without form, it is formless. The nature of the formless is formlessness itself. Or, that which can become form is form. Because it is without form, it is formless. Its nature is formlessness itself. The realm that possesses it is the formless realm. Or, the realms of desires are the desire realm.

That is, those who hold desires. The realms of form and formlessness should also be understood in the same way. What is meant by "desire"? In brief, it is the desire for food and sexual intercourse, not the various phenomena of the world. The conceptual thought of a person, craving, is desire. The various phenomena of the world exist as they are, but sentient beings subdue their desires in them. As it has been said in verse. The wandering ascetic Life-Saver said to the venerable Śāriputra: If the various phenomena of the world are not desire, but you say that conceptual craving is desire, then when a monk has an unwholesome thought, he becomes one who indulges in desire. When he said this, the venerable Śāriputra said: If the various phenomena of the world are desire, why is your conceptual craving not desire? When your teacher sees forms, he also becomes one who indulges in desire. So he said. Furthermore, are all the dharmas that are practiced in the desire realm, the form realm, and the formless realm all those that are associated with desire, form, and formlessness? The answer is no. What is it then? It is that which gives rise to craving for desire, form, and formlessness. And what are those cravings for desire, form, and formlessness? They are those that increase in the realms of desire, form, and formlessness. Now, this is like the analogy of a horse and a bridle. If one asks, "Whose is this horse's bridle?" one will say, "Whose is this horse?" If one asks, "Whose is this horse?" one will say, "Whose is this horse's bridle?" Thus, neither of them can be understood. This is not like the analogy of a horse and a bridle. For those who abide in the desire realm, whatever craving is not separated from craving, that is craving, and the dharma in which it increases is also associated with desire. Likewise, the craving for form and formlessness, and those who are separated from the craving for the lower realms, should also be understood accordingly. Moreover, the craving of the ground of equipoise is the craving of the desire realm. Craving for meditation and the formless realms is the cra
